Best practices for asset labels

These features are only available to partners who use YouTube Studio Content Manager.
Asset labels help you organize your assets and claims into custom categories. You can:
  • Apply up to 30 asset labels per asset.
  • Create a maximum of 15,000 asset labels per Content Manager.

To help make your labels as effective as they can be while staying under the maximum amounts, we recommend you follow these best practices:

 Choose clear and specific label names

  • Label names should represent a single attribute shared by the assets or claims you’re labeling. Attributes could include genre, artist name, music label name, or location.
    • Examples: Piano, Interview1, Interview2, 1080p, Recital, 1996, Championship, Clip1, Clip2
  • Choose keywords that will be useful and relevant to everyone who manages your content and analyzes performance reports.
  • Use identifying words that could be reused for other assets uploaded in the future.

Clear label names will lead to more meaningful performance reports and help you when grouping labels for campaigns.

Asset labels vs. Custom IDs: Avoid using asset labels in the same way you'd use a Custom ID. Asset labels are intended for grouping categories of assets and claims, not as a unique field. For example, a unique code such as “RTC1403728” should be a custom ID instead of an asset label.

 Apply multiple labels

  • Apply many asset labels (up to 30) to an asset for more grouping options, instead of creating specific labels to use for one scenario.

 Delete unused labels

  • Regularly delete asset labels you no longer use to prevent going over the 15,000 limit per Content Manager.
  • Deleting unused labels can also prevent having to undergo a full asset label audit.
