Asset label best practices

The features described in this article are available only to partners who use YouTube's Content ID matching system.

Asset labels are great tools for organizing and manipulating your assets and claims. You can apply up to 30 labels to any individual asset, but each partner is limited to a total of 5,000 labels.

Follow these tips to maximize your labels' impact and stay under the label limit:


We recommend avoiding:

  • Using asset labels the same way you'd use a Custom ID; asset labels are intended for grouping categories of assets and claims, rather than being used as a unique field
  • Using a label that isn't easily understood by collaborators across teams (such as an internal code); clear labels will lead to more meaningful performance reports and help you when grouping labels for campaigns

Example: A unique code such as RTC1403728 should be used in the custom ID field instead of as a label.

We recommend:

  • Creating individual labels that reference single attributes of the assets or claims you plan on applying them to; genre, artist or music label name, and location are all great elements to include as asset labels
  • Creating new labels by using keywords that will be useful to you and others who may manage your content. Asset labels are only viewable to the partner who created them.
  • Using identifiers that can be reused for other assets you might upload in the future

Examples: Piano, Interview1, Interview2, 1080p, Recital, 1996, Championship, Clip1, Clip2

We strongly recommend:

  • Applying multiple asset labels (up to 30) to an asset in combination to form more granular asset and claim grouping options, instead of creating specific labels that can only be used for one scenario
  • Performing powerful searches by entering labels and selecting either "Include all" or "Include any" from the search filter options on the Content ID Assets and Claims pages; this same filtering method is available from the Browse all content directory in the Analytics Overview tab



We’re constantly looking for ways to make asset labels more streamlined and easier to use. One aspect we’re currently investigating is applying and removing asset labels in bulk. For the most efficient experience, try using the Asset Update CSV template. You should be able to submit this simple form from the Content Delivery validator, as long as you have a list of asset_ids you want to update. This template supports up to 2,000 assets at a time.


Keep in mind that YouTube has a limit of 5,000 asset labels per partner. Regularly deleting labels when they are no longer in use can help prevent you from running up against the limit and having to undergo a full asset label audit.

Select the label you want to delete from the Labels tab under the Content ID menu in your CMS. From there, click on the trash icon to remove the label from your list. Keeping your list of labels up to date can save you a lot of work down the road.
