Auto-play videos

The auto-play feature on YouTube makes it easier to decide what to watch next. When auto-play is on, another related video will be played automatically after a video ends.

Bear in mind:

  • For users aged 13–17 on YouTube, auto-play is turned Off by default. If you're aged 18 or over, auto-play is turned On by default.
  • If you're using a supervised account, you may not have the option to turn on/off auto-play if your parent has turned off auto-play for you. Learn more about parental controls for supervised accounts.
  • You can have different auto-play settings for different devices. For example, you can set auto-play to be On in the YouTube app on your mobile device but set it to Off when watching YouTube on your computer.
  • If you're connected to a mobile network, auto-play will stop automatically if you've been inactive for 30 minutes. If you are on Wi-Fi, auto-play will stop automatically after four hours.

Auto-play on your mobile device or tablet

At the end of a video, the video player will show what's going to be played next. If you scroll past the video player or type something, like a comment or a search, the next video won't automatically be played.

Turn auto-play on or off on a video

  1. Go to the watch screen of any video.
  2. At the top of the video player, tap the auto-play switch to set it to On or Off .

  1. Tap your profile picture.
  2. Tap Settings .
  3. Tap Auto-play.
  4. Switch auto-play on or off.
Tip: If auto-play is on but you want to stop the next video from playing, tap Cancel at the end of a video.

Auto-play on your computer

At the end of a video, the video player will show what's going to be played next. If you scroll past the video player or type something, like a comment or a search, the next video won't automatically be played.

  1. Go to the watch screen of any video.
  2. At the bottom of the video player, click the auto-play switch to set it to On or Off .
Tip: If auto-play is on but you want to stop the next video from playing, tap Cancel at the end of a video.

Auto-play on your smart TV or game console

Auto-play on the YouTube app on your TV

To change your auto-play settings on the YouTube app on your TV:

  1. Open the YouTube app on your TV.
  2. Go to Settings .
  3. Scroll to Auto-play.
  4. Select the options to turn auto-play On or Off.

Auto-play while casting to your TV

If you've connected your TV to your phone or tablet, you can use your device to control auto-play.

  1. Connect your mobile device to your TV device and pick a video to play.
  2. To expand your queue and view your auto-play settings, tap the control bar at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Use the switch to turn auto-play off.

Turn auto-play on or off

If you're using YouTube on your smart display and want to turn auto-play on or off:

  1. Open the Home app on your mobile device.
  2. Tap the smart display that you'd like to modify.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap Notifications and Digital Wellbeing.
  5. Tap YouTube settings.
  6. There are two ways in which you can control auto-play settings for your smart display:
    • If you're voice matched, auto-play can be turned on or off for you and
    • Auto-play can be turned on or off for all other users.
