YouTube Red FAQ for YouTube partners & creators

For years, YouTube’s fans have been telling us they want more—more choice when watching their favorite content, more ways to support their favorite creators and, above all, the option to watch their favorite videos uninterrupted.

Our new paid membership, YouTube Red, lets members enjoy any video on YouTube without ads while still supporting creators. It also lets members save videos to watch offline on mobile and play videos in the background. Membership extends across devices and anywhere a user signs into YouTube. Learn more about becoming a YouTube Red member.

YouTube Red is all about giving fans more choice. By focusing on what fans want, YouTube Red will play an important role in expanding user engagement on YouTube and provide you with an additional way to get paid for the content you’re already creating. And while it'll take time to build a significant membership base, we’re confident that as membership grows, YouTube Red will begin to deliver more and more value to you.

What happens if viewers choose not to subscribe to YouTube Red?

The ad-supported YouTube you know and love is not going anywhere and is a core part of our business. If a user chooses not to become a member, they'll continue to experience the same free, ad-supported YouTube as they do today.

You may see some variation is in the experiences developed for verticals, like YouTube Gaming or YouTube Kids, and in the YouTube Red Original Series and Movies.

Questions about content on YouTube Red

Will my content be available with YouTube Red?

Yes, all of your videos that appear on ad-supported YouTube will also be available without ads with YouTube Red.

Do I need to pay to join YouTube Red to keep my content on YouTube?

No. You do not have to pay to keep your content on YouTube or to have it included in YouTube Red. Your videos are automatically visible to users on ad-supported YouTube, as well as through a paid membership to YouTube Red.

The paid membership fees provide a new source of revenue for creators like you. YouTube Red members can also save your videos to watch offline on mobile and play them in the background — helping you get more watch time.

Will creators still be paid with YouTube Red?

Yes, of course. In fact, YouTube Red provides a secondary revenue stream for creators in addition to what you're already earning today through ads.

How is revenue determined?

New revenue from YouTube Red membership fees will be distributed to video creators based on how much members watch your content. As with our advertising business, the majority of the revenue will go to creators.

When will I see the money from this new revenue stream?

Subscription revenue payments will be sent at the beginning of each month, at the same time you would normally receive ad revenue payments.

If you have access to the downloadable reports, you can also access the revenue report in Creator Studio at this time.

As the number of YouTube Red members grows, we expect YouTube Red to have a positive impact on your audience engagement.
