Provide YouTube with game data

As a game publisher or developer, you can help YouTube present your games in the best possible way by letting us know where to find the latest information about your games.

To provide YouTube with game information:

  1. For each game that you publish, mark up its landing page on your official publisher website using tags from schema.org's VideoGame schema.

The markup tags annotate your webpage so that YouTube and Google Search can understand it and present information about it more effectively. See the Markup sample section below for more information about marking up the page for YouTube, and the Video Game Markup page for Google Search.

  2. Use Google Search Console to add the marked-up site to your user account and verify that you own the site.

  3. Grant YouTube permission to use the information contained in the markups.

Make sure you complete the agreement using the same user account that you used in Search Console.

For questions, please refer to the Webmaster Central structured data forum.

Marking up your pages

You can embed data in your web pages using schema.org property names and the new JSON-LD data format. JSON-LD is easy to produce with many widely available JSON encoders. The data, enclosed within the <script type="application/ld+json"> ... </script> tags as shown in the examples below may be placed in either the <HEAD> or <BODY> region of the page. The markup does not affect how your document appears in users’ web browsers.

YouTube and Google also accept schema.org markup using microdata or RDFa formats.

We strongly encourage you to mark up your pages with as many VideoGame properties as possible, but the properties critical to YouTube are:

Property name Description
name The official title or name of the game.
description A short synopsis of the game plot. The description should not contain any advertising or unsubstantiated claims ("the best game!").
genre The genre(s) of the game, selected from this list.
image (poster art) Box cover or poster art for the game. Dimensions should be 1024x1440px or similar 5:7 aspect ratio resolution. The art should not contain any specific platform branding. Files named poster.* will be prioritized.
Cover art
screenshot (background art) Background, banner art, or screenshot of the game. Dimensions should be 2560x1440px or similar 16:9 aspect ratio resolution. The art should not contain any specific platform branding. Files named backgroundart.* will be prioritized.
Background art
sameAs (Wikipedia) A Wikipedia URL for your game. This helps us to uniquely identify your game.
sameAs (YouTube channel) A YouTube channel URL for your game. This helps us feature your official channel alongside your game.
exampleOfWork An annotation for a specific release of the game on a game platform and locale.
exampleOfWork.name The name of the specific release. Please differentiate special editions, such as Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare - Day Zero Edition.
exampleOfWork.gamePlatform URL(s) of the game platform for the release. Use the Wikipedia article for the platform, such as "http://wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_4", "http://wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_7". You can specify multiple platforms if they all share the same release name, date, and location.
exampleOfWork.contentRating The content rating(s) of the game. The format should be "<ratingAgency> <rating>", such as "ESRB M", "USK 16+", "PEGI 16+", "CERO A".
exampleOfWork.releasedEvent An annotation that specifies the date and location of the release on the specified platform(s). This property can be omitted if the release has not yet been announced.
exampleOfWork.releasedEvent.startDate The date the release was made available for purchase by the general public. Use ISO 8601 format. The release date should be unique for a given locale and platform.
exampleOfWork.releasedEvent.location The location of the release.
  • For Country, use the 2-letter ISO-3166-1 alpha-2 code.
  • For Place, use one of the following values: "EU" (Europe), "NA" (North America), "PAL" (Asia/Oceania), "WW" (worldwide).

To test your markup, please use the Structured Data Testing Tool. Make sure you select Filter by use case > Video Games in the results pane.
