Certain older YouTube apps are not supported
The current YouTube app will not work on certain device models from 2012 and older.
We will continue to focus our efforts on improving our official YouTube app for TV which is available on most 2013 and newer Smart TVs and Blu-ray players, game consoles, streaming devices, and set-top boxes (e.g. Virgin Media, BSkyB Now TV Box, TiVo). You can find a list of our device partners here.
Devices affected
Select devices manufactured in 2012 and earlier, including:
- Sony TVs & Blu-ray Discs
- Panasonic TVs & Blu-ray Discs
- Sony Playstation Vita
- Older iOS (iOS 8 and earlier) devices
- Older AppleTV (1st and 2nd gen)
- Older set-top boxes (ex, DirectTV)
How can I continue using YouTube on affected devices?
iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPadYou can download the latest version of the YouTube iOS app with iOS 9+ from the App Store. If not, visit m.youtube.com in your mobile browser to access YouTube.
If you’re using Apple TV 3rd generation, you can get the latest version of the YouTube app by updating your software:
- Select Settings > General > Update Software
- If there is an upgrade available, click Download and Install
If you’re using Apple TV 2nd generation or older, unfortunately there’s no current way to watch YouTube on these devices.
If you have a web browser on your Smart TV or game console that supports HTML5, you may be able to continue using YouTube by visiting www.youtube.com in your browser.
If you’re using Roku 3 or Roku Streaming Stick, you can get the latest version of the YouTube app by turning your device off and on. To turn off your Roku, simply unplug the power cable from the back of the player. Turn your Roku back on by plugging in the power cable, and you’ll be able to access the YouTube app.
You can still subscribe to RSS feeds for YouTube channels and subscriptions.
Many RSS readers, including Feedly, Inoreader, and NewsBlur, have already migrated existing YouTube feeds to their new versions. If you use one of these, you don't have to take further action.
