Use Content ID matching on live streams

 

These features are only available to partners who use YouTube Studio Content Manager.

Certain partners can use Content ID matching to find copies of their live streams happening in real time. Access to live Content ID matching is given at the Content Manager level. However, matching can only be turned on and managed by the individual channel streaming.

Turn on Content ID matching for your live stream

Before you begin, be sure to add any authorized channels that will be live streaming the event to your allowlist.

To start your live stream with Content ID matching:

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio and select CREATE and then Go live.
  2. In the left menu, click Stream.
  3. Click New live event.
  4. Select the Monetization tab.
  5. Beneath “Usage policy,” select a policy for your live stream.
  6. Check the box beneath “Enable Content ID matches” and select either a block or monetize match policy. Note: Some policies work differently or can’t be used with live Content ID matching. See details below.
  7. Enter details about your asset. Select Web as your asset type.
  8. Add remaining details for your live stream and start streaming.

How do policies work with live streams?

Copies of your live stream can’t be tracked or monetized. You can choose either a monetize or block match policy, but both will result in live stream warnings and eventually takedowns. Track policies will not work for Content ID matching on live streams.

In addition, policies that route content for review and policies with video match percentage conditions can’t be used with live Content ID matching.

Requirements for Content ID matching on live streams

Eligibility requirements

Using Content ID matching on live streams is highly sensitive and adds a layer of complexity to rights management. To get access, you must have:

  • A proven record of operating Content ID without issue.
  • Time-sensitive live content, such as a sports event or music festival.
  • A high probability that users will live stream copies of your content.

Operating requirements

Once you have access to use Content ID matching on live streams, be sure your stream meets all the following requirements:

  1. Global rights: Content ID matching for live streams can only be used on content that you own the rights to in all territories globally.
  2. Exclusive ownership: Your live stream can’t include any third-party content, such as static images, commercials, or background music.

Using Content ID matching, we compare your live stream with other live streams. When a match is found:

  • Initially, we’ll show a warning message to the streamer using your content.
  • If matching continues, their stream may be replaced by a static image with no sound.
  • If matching still continues, their live stream may be terminated and the streamer may lose access to live features. Learn more about copyright issues on live streams.
