Remove claimed songs from videos

If your video has a copyright claim for its music, there may be restrictions on where the video is available or whether it can be monetised.

Sometimes, you can mute the claimed music and remove these restrictions.

Note that even if you use this tool, you're still responsible for any use of third-party content in your videos. If your video is ineligible, you won't see the Mute song option.

Note
  • If your video has over 100,000 views, you sometimes cannot save your video edits. This restriction doesn't apply to users who are in the YouTube Partner Programme.
  • This feature is only available for videos shorter than six hours.

Remove a track from a video with a copyright claim:

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. From the left Menu, click Videos.
  3. Find the video that you want to remove a song from.
  4. Beneath the 'Restrictions' column, hover over 'Copyright claim' and click SEE DETAILS.
  5. Click SELECT ACTION and then Mute song.
  6. Find the claim that you want to remove the song from. If your video has several claims, you'll need to edit each of them individually.
  7. Click the SELECT ACTION down arrow.
  8. Click Mute Song and choose how you'd like to mute.
    • Mute all sound when song plays
      • This option allows you to mute the portion of your video where the claimed audio appears.
    • Mute song only (beta)
      • This option allows you to mute just the claimed song while keeping the background audio intact. This option is only available for audio claims made through Content ID matching.
      • This edit usually takes longer and might not work if the song is hard to remove.
  9. Preview the edit in the video player, then click CONTINUE and then MUTE. The edit will now start processing.
Note
  • Processing times can vary.
  • You can close the window while the edit is processing.
  • You can't make any other edits while the video is still processing.
  • The video will remain in its current state until this process is complete.

For now, you'll need to refresh the entire page to check if the edit was successful and if the claim was released. We're working on adding notifications in YouTube Studio to let you know when an edit is complete. If we can't mute the copyrighted song we'll update any restrictions on your video.
