Manage your caption certification

Federal Communications Commission regulations require closed captions for certain content that appeared on television in the United States on or after September 30, 2012. If your content does not require captions, you can inform us by selecting a certification.

Note: If we receive a complaint regarding the availability of captions, we may ask you to update this certification info.

Add caption certificate for new videos

To add closed captions to new videos:

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. In the top-right corner, click CREATE  and then Upload videos.
  3. Click Select Files and choose a video.
  4. Scroll down and click SHOW MORE.
  5. Under “Language and captions certification,” you can select the language and caption certification.
  6. Once done, fill out your video details.
  7. Then click Next and follow the steps to upload a video on YouTube. Learn how to upload a video.

Add caption certificate for existing videos

To add closed captions to existing videos:

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. From the left menu, click Content and select the video you want to upload.
  3. At the bottom, click SHOW MORE.
  4. Under “Language and captions certification,” you can select the language and caption certification.
  5. At the top, click Save.
