Edit or remove captions

Edit captions

You can use the captions editor to make changes to the text and time codes of your captions. You can also use caption editing software or services.

Edit caption text

Note: If you're editing captions created automatically, a new caption track that includes your revisions will be generated.

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. From the left-hand menu, select Subtitles.
  3. Click the video that you'd like to edit.
  4. For the language that you'd like to edit, in the Subtitles column, select Options  and then Edit.
  5. In the top right-hand corner, click Edit.
  6. Click on the caption track that you want to edit.
  7. Click inside any line in the caption track panel and edit the text.
  8. Once you've finished making changes, click Publish edits in the top right-hand corner.
  9. You'll be asked to confirm that you want to overwrite existing subtitles. Click Publish.
Edit caption timing

You can edit the timing on your caption tracks directly in the YouTube captions editor or by downloading your caption files.

Use the YouTube captions editor

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. From the left-hand menu, select Subtitles.
  3. Click the video that you'd like to edit.
  4. For the language that you'd like to edit, in the Subtitles column,  select Options  and then Edit.
  5. In the top right-hand corner, select Edit.
  6. Select a specific line in the caption track panel:
    1. On your keyboard, press the up or down arrow to adjust timing
    2. On your keyboard, press the left or right arrow to change duration
  7. Once you've finished making changes, click Publish edits in the top right-hand corner.
  8. You'll be asked to confirm that you want to overwrite existing subtitles. Click Publish.

Download and edit caption files

You can edit time codes by downloading the caption file and using a plain text (.txt) editing program like TextEdit or Notepad to make edits. 

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. From the left-hand menu, select Subtitles.
  3. Click the video that you'd like to edit.
  4. For the language that you'd like to edit, in the Subtitles column,  select Options  and then Edit.
  5. Click the Actions drop-down menu and select Download. Learn more about caption file formats
  6. Your browser will download a file containing the captions track. Edit the file and save it.
  7. Follow the instructions to upload the captions to your video again.

Remove captions

To stop captions from being shown on your video, you can delete them completely from your video and YouTube account.

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. From the left-hand menu, select Subtitles.
  3. Click the video that you'd like to delete.
  4. For the language that you'd like to delete,  in the Subtitles column,  select Options  and then Delete.
  5. You'll be asked to confirm that you want to delete the captions. Click Delete Captions.
