Set your default ad formats

You can set ad format defaults to apply consistently to all new uploads. When you do this, you don't have to change the settings every time you upload a video.

You can specify which types of advertisements YouTube displays by selecting the ad formats you want to allow (you can override this choice for specific videos). Learn more about how YouTube automatically determines how ad formats display.

We recommend allowing all ad formats on your videos to maximize your earnings. Different ad formats may yield different amounts of revenue and affect video viewership differently. We can't predict how changing your default ad settings might affect your audience and monetization, but you can use YouTube Analytics to help track performance changes.

Set default ad formats

To specify the default set ads formats you want to allow for your channel:

  1. Sign in to YouTube with your account or a user name that's linked to your YouTube content owner.
  2. In the top right, click the account icon > Creator Studio.
  3. Go to the Upload defaults page by clicking Channel > Upload defaults.
  4. In the Ad formats section, select the checkbox next to each type of ad format you want to allow for monetized videos that you upload. All of the formats are selected by default. Learn more about the available options by clicking the question mark icon next to each ad format.
  5. In the top right, click Save.

Override ad format defaults

To override the allowable ad formats for an individual video:

  1. Sign in to YouTube with your account or a user name that's linked to your YouTube content owner.
  2. In the top right, click the account icon > Creator Studio > Video Manager.
  3. Next to the video, click Edit.
  4. Click the Monetization tab and make sure the assigned usage policy is Monetize.
  5. Select which ad formats to use for the video. Learn more about the available options by clicking the question mark icon next to each ad format.
  6. In the bottom right, click Save changes.
You can also set the ad formats for multiple videos at once.
