Use Live Chat during your live stream or Premiere

Live Chat lets you have real-time interactions with your viewers during live streams and Premieres. To view your Live Chat, click the down arrow at the top of the chat menu and select Top Chat or All Chat.

Pin messages

You can pin your own message or a viewer’s message in Live Chat. Pinned messages show below Super Chat. To pin a message:

  1. Sign in to the YouTube app on mobile.
  2. Tap CREATE  and then Live
  3. Start your live stream. 
  4. Find a message from Live Chat, even your own, and tap or tap “More” .
  5. Tap or tap Pin .

Note: You can only pin one message at a time. To replace a pinned message, simply pin another message. Only you, not your moderators or viewers, can pin messages. To unpin a message, tap “More” on a pinned message and then Unpin.

Create a live poll

  1. Sign in to the YouTube app on mobile.
  2. Tap CREATE  and then Live
  3. Start your live stream. 
  4. From the bottom of the chat window, tap and then Create a poll
  5. Create your poll.
  6. To end a poll and see the results in the chat from the banner at the top of the chat, tap End poll.

  7. Select Ask your community.

Start a Live Q&A

Live Q&A lets you find and select questions within your Live Chat to answer for your viewers. To start a Live Q&A:

  1. Sign in to the YouTube app on mobile.
  2. Tap CREATE  and then Live
  3. Start your live stream. 
  4. From the bottom of the chat window, tap  and then Start a Q&A.
  5. Add a prompt and tap Start Q&A.

Answer questions from the chat

Once you start a Live Q&A, the “Questions List” will appear in the chat window. To answer a question:

  1. Select a question from the Questions List.
  2. Tap “Menu” and then Select Question. The question will be pinned to the top of the chat window and visible to your viewers.
  3. Tap Close to remove a question banner from the chat window.

End a Live Q&A

  1. To end your Live Q&A, tap End Q&A at the top of the chat. All unanswered questions in the list will be deleted and Live Q&A sessions will be available in Chat Replay.
  • To delete a question that you’ve submitted that has not been pinned to chats, go to My Activity.
  • To delete questions that are pinned to the chat window, tap “Menu”  and then Delete.

Create a Q&A sticker

Note

  • Currently, this feature is only available on the YouTube mobile app. 
  • In your account, you can access My Google Activity to view a collection of the live Q&A stickers you've used.

You can ask your viewers questions by adding a Q&A sticker to your live steam. Once a question is answered by viewers, the comment will become publicly visible to other viewers.

  1. Sign in to the YouTube app on mobile.
  2. Tap CREATE  and then Live
  3. Start your live stream. 
  4. At the bottom, tap Add  and then Start a Q&A.
  5. Type the question that you’d like to ask your viewers. 
    • Note: You can customize the sticker and preview it before starting. 
  6. Once ready, tap Start Q&A.

Turn reactions on or off

You can turn reactions on or off during a live stream. You can change this setting at any point during your stream.

  1. Sign in to the YouTube app on mobile.
  2. Tap CREATE  and then Live
  3. Tap Edit  and then Advanced settings  .
  4. Toggle Allow reactions on or off.

Embed a Live Chat

During a live stream, you can embed Live Chat on your own site by using an iframe. Embedding Live Chat isn't available on mobile web.

  1. Get the video ID for the live stream from the watch page URL.
  2. Get the domain URL for the site you want to embed chat on.
  3. Combine the embedded URL in the following way: https://www.youtube.com/live_chat?v=12345&embed_domain=www.example.com.

This URL is for your iframe. The embed_domain must match the URL of the page you’re embedding the chat on. If they are different, the embedded chat will not open.

  • Video URLs: If your URL is youtube.com/watch?v=12345, your video ID is ‘12345’.
  • Domain URLs: If you're embedding chat on www.example.com/youtube_chat, your embedding domain is "www.example.com".
