New YouTube Channels with Google+ Names

An increasing number of new YouTube channels are choosing to be represented by a Google+ profile instead of picking a traditional unique username (e.g. MysteryGuitarMan).

While YouTube usernames were always unique, Google+ profile names, which are based on users’ full names, are not.

In order to address this issue, we create a unique an external ID to represent each user.  These external IDs are supported in the YouTube CMS wherever a YouTube username can be entered.

The external ID of a channel based on a Google+ profile can be determined from the URL of the channel.  For example:

The external ID is the alphanumeric string prefixed with “UC”.  In this example, the external ID would be “BiTuzlTyj....”.
