If you’re a video creator, you can use the video clips and Shorts tool to easily cut out engaging segments from your long-form videos on YouTube and instantly publish them as separate video clips or Shorts.
Create Shorts

Videos.
- Click the existing video that you want to use
.
- In the left-hand menu, select Clips and Shorts.
- Click Create clip or Short (in the upper-right hand corner if you’ve created a clip or Short before with this tool, or the center of the page if it’s your first time)
choose Short.
- Click Create clip or Short (in the upper-right hand corner if you’ve created a clip or Short before with this tool, or the center of the page if it’s your first time)
- Select which part of your existing video you’d like to extract into a new Short. There are 2 main ways to do this:
- Option 1: Manually choose by selecting the text from the transcript that you’d like to use for your Short and clicking “Confirm selection” or entering the timestamps that you’d like to use in the timeline editor. You’ll find the selected segment highlighted in the video timeline.
- Option 2: If available, you can leverage the AI-powered suggestions that appear in the left panel. Select one of the available suggestions. You can also view an AI-generated outline to more easily navigate your video’s transcript and select moments from the outline.
- Optional: You can adjust the start and end points of the clip using the transcript or the video timeline. If you use the suggested Short without changes, you may get a suggested title.
Note:
AI-powered suggestions and outlines are currently available for creators in select countries (Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Mexico, South Korea, Spain, United Kingdom, United States) and in select languages (English, French, German, Hindi, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish).
The transcript in the video clips tool will be used to create the auto-generated captions for your Short.
- Once you’ve finished selecting the part of your video you’d like to convert into a Short, go to the upper right-hand corner and select Preview Short.
- Where available, the system automatically adds autocaptions to the Short. You can customize the color, font, styling, and position or disable the autocaptions by clicking Captions in the bottom left of the Shorts preview.
- Note: The preview may be lower resolution than the final video. You may also see black bars lining the top and bottom of the video for some scenes in the preview, but the final version will display them as a blurred crop of the video.
- Once you’re satisfied with your Short, click Create Draft. Complete the standard upload dialog to publish.
