Parental controls and settings for supervised experiences on YouTube

Parents who decide that their child under 13 (or the relevant age in their country or region) is ready to explore YouTube can set up a supervised account. There are various controls and settings for you to guide your child's viewing journey through a supervised experience.

Manage parental controls and settings

When you set up a Google Account for your child, you can set up parental controls for a supervised YouTube experience through:

• YouTube: Under Parental settings in your linked parent account's YouTube settings
• Family Link: Under 'YouTube settings' in the Family Link app

Use your linked parent account's YouTube settings

To view parental controls and settings for supervised experiences from your YouTube settings:

1. Sign in to YouTube with your linked parent account.
2. Go to your profile picture .
3. Select Settings .
4. Select Parental settings.
   1. If you're on a computer, select Manage settings for your children next to 'Parental settings'.

Use the Family Link app

To view parental controls and settings for YouTube Kids profiles or supervised YouTube experiences from Family Link:

1. On your device, open the Family Link app .
2. Select your child.
3. Tap Controls  Content restrictions YouTube.
4. Change your child's supervised experience on YouTube settings under 'YouTube settings'.

Change specific parental controls and settings

You can tailor the supervised YouTube experience for your child by adjusting specific parental controls and settings. These controls and settings let you:

Block content

You can sign in to YouTube with your linked parent account to block specific channels that you don't want your child to watch.

Change your child's content-level settings 

Parents can choose how content will be selected for a supervised experience on YouTube.

Change your child's content-level setting from YouTube:

1. Sign in to YouTube with your linked parent account.
2. Go to your profile picture .
3. Select Settings .
4. Select Parental settings.
5. Select your child's profile or account.
6. If you'd like to change the content setting for their supervised experience on YouTube:

   • Under YouTube settings, select EDIT next to 'Content settings'.

If you manage your child's Google Account with Family Link, you can also change their content-level setting from the Family Link app:

1. On your device, open the Family Link app .
2. Select your child.
3. Tap Controls  Content restrictions  YouTube.
4. Change your child's content-level setting for their supervised experience on YouTube under 'YouTube settings'.

Note: You'll get a preview of content that is available in each content setting when you click or tap the content setting's name. You can change these settings at any time.

Review your child's watch history

You can review your child's watch history for their supervised account on your child's device:

1. Go to the My Activity page.
2. Select YouTube History.
3. Select Manage history.
4. Scroll to review watch history.

Clear history

You can clear the watch and search history for your child's account across all of their linked devices from YouTube:

1. Sign in to YouTube with your linked parent account.
2. Go to your profile picture .
3. Select Settings .
4. Select Parental settings.
5. Select your child's profile or account.
6. Select Clear history.
7. To save your changes, select CLEAR.

Disable auto-play

You can turn off auto-play for your child by selecting 'Disable auto-play'. Your child can't turn on auto-play when this setting is on.

To disable auto-play for your child from YouTube:

1. Sign in to YouTube with your linked parent account.
2. Go to your profile picture .
3. Select Settings .
4. Select Parental settings.
5. Select your child's profile or account.
6. Switch Disable auto-play to on.

Pause watch history

You can stop new video views from being used as signals to recommend other videos.

To pause your child's watch history from YouTube:

1. Sign in to YouTube with your linked parent account.
2. Go to your profile picture .
3. Select Settings .
4. Select Parental settings.
5. Select your child's profile or account.
6. Switch Pause watch history to on.

Pause search history

You can stop new search terms from being used as signals to recommend other videos. 

To pause your child's search history from YouTube:

1. Sign in to YouTube with your linked parent account.
2. Go to your profile picture .
3. Select Settings .
4. Select Parental settings.
5. Select your child's profile or account.
6. Switch Pause search history to on.
