Add or get Subtitle Editor access in YouTube Studio

Subtitle Editor is a new channel permission in YouTube Studio that allows creators to delegate subtitle creation on their channel to others. Learn more about how to add or remove access to your YouTube channel.

The Subtitle Editor role is not available if you’re using a Brand Account. Learn more about how to move to channel permissions from a Brand Account.
Subtitle Editor Role Using Channel Permissions

Give access to Subtitle Editor role as a channel owner or manager

Important: Only give access to users who you trust. 
  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio on a computer.
  2. From the left menu, click Settings.
  3. Click Permissions.
  4. Click Invite and enter the email address of the channel you’d like to invite.
    1. The invited channel must be associated with a Google Account.
  5. Click Access and select the Subtitle Editor role.
  6. Click Done.
  7. Click Save to send the invitation.

Set video language as a channel owner or manager

Subtitle Editors can only add or edit subtitles on the videos where you’ve set a video language.

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio on a computer.
  2. On the left menu, click Content.
  3. Click the checkboxes next to all videos you’d like to add subtitles to.
  4. On the top bar, click Edit.
  5. From the Down arrow, select Video language.
  6. Choose your preferred video language.
  7. Click UPDATE VIDEOS.
To set a default video language for all future uploads, go to Settings in YouTube Studio. Under the Advanced Settings tab, select your preferred video language.

Get access to Subtitle Editor role as non-channel owner/manager

  1. First, a creator needs to invite you to be a Subtitle Editor in their YouTube Studio settings.
  2. Once a creator has invited you, check your email for a message titled “Invitation to access [channel name].”
  3. Click Accept Invitation to be brought into YouTube Studio.
    1. A popup will show the channel name you’ll be editing subtitles for, and your channel role.
  4. Click CLOSE to continue into Studio as Subtitle Editor.
Note: Subtitle Editors only have access to the Subtitles section of YouTube Studio. Users with this permission level can’t view other channel info or revenue data. Learn more about permissions for Subtitle Editor.

Add subtitles as Subtitle Editor

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio on a computer.
  2. Verify that you’re in the Subtitles section on the left menu.
  3. To find a video to add subtitles to, click into the All, Drafts, or Published tabs.
  4. Click the video that you'd like to edit.
  5. Click ADD LANGUAGE and select your language.
  6. Under subtitles, click ADD.
