Apply and manage licence strategies on assets

Creator Music is now available to US creators in the YouTube Partner Programme (YPP). Expansion to YPP creators outside of the US is pending.

Once you've created a licence strategy, you can apply it to your licensable assets so that they become available for licensing on Creator Music. If you no longer want an asset to be licensed from Creator Music, you can deactivate the asset's licence strategy.

Apply a licence strategy to an asset

To add a licence strategy to an asset:

  1. Sign in to Studio Content Manager.
  2. From the left menu, select Assets .
  3. Click the asset that you want to add a licence strategy to.
  4. On the asset's detail page, click Monetisation
  5. Click the Platform strategies tab or the Channel-based strategies tab.
  6. Click SELECT PLATFORM STRATEGY or SELECT CHANNEL-BASED STRATEGY.
  7. Search for the strategy title and select it from the list.
  8. Click APPLY.
    • Note: You may see a notice 'Pricing update available for this strategy' and an EDIT button. Learn more about pricing updates.
    • If a publisher has provided a pricing floor, your licence strategy must meet the minimum price set by the publisher. A licence strategy is ineligible if just one channel segment's pricing is less than the publisher's price for that asset.

The strategy that you just applied will show at the top of the list with the 'Current terms' label in the Status column.

Apply a licence strategy to many assets at once

The maximum number of assets that you can update at once is 2500. To add a licence strategy to multiple assets:

  1. Sign in to Studio Content Manager.
  2. From the left-hand menu, select Assets .
  3. Tick the box next to each asset that you'd like to update.
    • To select all assets on a single page, tick the box at the top.
    • To select all assets on all pages, tick the box at the top and click Select all matching.
  4. Click Edit  and then Set licence strategy.
    • This bulk action will set a licence strategy on selected assets. The new terms will be reflected in Creator Music. Existing licence acquisitions and usages associated with the asset won't be affected.
    • This action will replace any existing licence strategy of the same type on selected assets.
  5. Select a licence strategy from the dropdown menu and then APPLY.
    • If you select a platform-based licence strategy, only the asset's platform strategies will be updated.
  6. Click UPDATE ASSETS and confirm the number of assets in the pop-up window.
Note: If a publisher has provided a pricing floor, your licence strategy must meet the minimum price set by the publisher. A licence strategy is ineligible if just one channel segment's pricing is less than the publisher's price for that asset.

Deactivate an asset's licence strategy

If you no longer want an asset to be licensed from Creator Music, you can deactivate the asset's licence strategy. Keep in mind that any existing licence acquisitions and usages associated with the asset won't be affected.

Once an asset's licence strategy is deactivated, the asset will be removed from Creator Music and creators won't be able to license the associated track anymore.

To deactivate the licence strategy on an asset:

  1. Sign in to Studio Content Manager.
  2. From the left menu, select Assets .
  3. Click the asset whose licence strategy you want to deactivate.
  4. On the asset's detail page, click Monetisation
  5. Click the Platform strategies tab or the Channel-based strategies tab.
  6. Click DEACTIVATE PLATFORM STRATEGY or DEACTIVATE CHANNEL-BASED STRATEGY.
  7. Read the dialogue warning and click DEACTIVATE.

The strategy that you just deactivated will show on top of the list with the label 'Previous terms' in the Status column.

Note: Licence strategies can't be deleted, they can only be deactivated on assets. To deactivate a licence strategy on all the assets that it's applied to, follow the steps here.
