Manage caption settings

You can turn captions (subtitles) on or off for videos that have them. You can also change the default caption settings, like font style or language, on your computer or mobile device.

Turn captions on or off

1. Go to the watch page of any video.
2. Tap the video player once to show options. Tap Closed captions to turn captions on.
3. To turn captions off, tap Closed captions again.

Note: If you can't see Closed captions , then closed captions (CC) aren't available for this video.

Change default size and style

1. Open your iPhone or iPad's settings app.
2. Go to Accessibility.
3. Under the 'Hearing' section, tap Subtitles and captioning.
4. Tap Style to change the size and style for the display and font.
5. Tap Create new style for more font styles, sizes and colours.

Change default on or off setting

1. Open your iPhone or iPad's settings app.
2. Go to Accessibility.
3. Under the 'Hearing' section, tap Subtitles and captioning.
4. Tap Closed captions + SDH to always serve captions when available.

Select a language

1. At the top right of the video player, click More .
2. Click Captions.
3. Select a language.

If the language isn't listed when you click 'Subtitles/CC':

1. Click Auto-translate.
2. Select a language.

Turn 'Show when muted' on and off

Note: Show when muted is currently available on mobile and tablet.

1. Go to the watch page of any video.
2. Tap the video player once to show options, then tap Settings .
3. Tap Captions for the captions menu.
4. Next to 'Show when muted', tap to turn on this feature.
