Terms to know

When migrating data with Google Workspace Migrate, you might find the following terms helpful to know.

  • Action—Tasks in a migration. Each action is run on a node server.
  • Additional permissions—Additional permissions occur when a user has more or a higher level of permissions for a child folder or file than they do for the parent folder. For example, a user has no permissions for a parent folder but has permissions on a folder or file within the parent folder. Or, the user has a more permissive role for the child file (such as read permissions on the parent and write on the child).
  • Bridge—Used to migrate source data to your target domain.
  • Connection—Used by Google Workspace Migrate to access the source and target data environments and read, convert, and transfer data.
  • Delta—An additional migration step used to transfer new or modified source data to your target domain, once the primary migration is complete.
  • Google Workspace Migrate platform—The user interface for Google Workspace Migrate. The platform is where authorized administrators can set up, manage, and run migrations.
  • Identity mapping—A mapping that transfers source identity references to G Suite identity references.
  • List—A one-column list of values used to define the scope of access that’s available to a connection, scan, or bridge. For example, a list of mailboxes in Exchange.
  • Mapping—Determines what content gets migrated and where it gets migrated to. The entries in a smart mapping are validated.
  • Node servers—Servers used to run actions (parts of a scan).
  • Object—A migration unit (for example, file, folder, permission, permission set, email, or calendar event). An object appears as a single row in the transaction log.
  • Partitions—Tasks in bridges or scans. Each partition is run by an available node within the Google Workspace Migrate infrastructure.
  • Permission set—An object that contains a list of the users that have permissions on a migrated item. A permission set is used to remove permissions from users that don't have access to the file or folder in the source environment.
  • Project—A shared working space where administrators can collaborate on migration tasks.
  • Scan—A survey of the source data. A scan generates reports that are used to assess the amount and type of source data.
  • Restricted permissions—Restricted permissions occur when a user has more or a higher level of permissions for a parent folder than they do for a folder or file within the parent folder (the child folder). For example, a user has permissions for a folder (the parent), but no permissions for a file or folder within the parent (the child).
  • Scoped view—Defines what data is accessed by a scan.
  • Settings template—Used by bridges to apply settings between 2 connections. Determines what types of content is migrated and how the data appears after a migration.
  • Source environment—The environment you’re migrating from.
  • Target environment—The environment you’re migrating to.
  • Transaction—A record of any object that is processed by Google Workspace Migrate.
  • Tree view—Displays the content located in a connection. You can use it to explore the data structure.
