Set up your Android 6.0+ device

You can now use Android 6.0+ devices at your company. Just add a work profile to your account.

Before you begin

Set up a work profile for your account

If your company uses a third-party EMM provider, ask your administrator how to set up your device.
If G Suite is your EMM provider, choose an option below to set up your device.

Set up a work profile for a new account on your device
  1. On your device, go to Settings > Accounts > Add an Account.
  2. Enter your email address and password, tap Accept
  3. (Optional) Read about the available Google services, tap Next.
  4. (Optional) To allow the Google Apps Device Policy app to enforce security policies on your account, tap Next.
  5. Tap Install to update to the latest version of the Google Apps Device Policy app, then tap Next to register the device on the server.
  6. To activate Google Apps Device Policy app as a device administrator, tap Activate.
  7. To enforce the device policies for your company, tap Enforce.
  8. (Optional) If prompted, enter device PIN or password.
  9. (Optional) If your device is not already encrypted, you will be prompted to encrypt it.
    Note: You must start encryption with a charged battery and keep your device plugged in throughout the encryption process.
    1. To encrypt your accounts, settings, downloaded apps and their data, media, and other files, tap Encrypt Phone or Encrypt Tablet
    2. If prompted, enter your Google Apps Device Policy PIN or password.
    3. To confirm encryption, tap Encrypt Phone or Encrypt Tablet
    4. When your device reboots, tap the Encryption complete notification to continue setting up your work profile.
  10. Tap Google Apps Device Policy, then open the Status screen from the left slide-out menu.
  11. This step has 2 scenarios depending on the settings your administrator has set for your device.
    • If your administrator requires that you set up a work profile on your device, a screen displays that requests you to set it up. Tap Next.

      Note: You won’t be able to access work information on your device without a work profile.

    • If setting up a work profile on your device is optional, you will see a message under work profile that says that you have the option of setting up a work profile. Tap Create, then tap OK to confirm that you want to move your account to the work profile.
  12. To set up your work profile, tap Set Up. 
  13. To allow your administrator to monitor and manage your work profile, tap OK.
  14. (Optional) If your administrator requires that they need to approve your device, you’ll see a note on the Status screen that your device is pending approval. You’ll receive a notification on your device when your administrator approves it.

After you set up your device, you can go to managed Google Play in your work profile and install work apps that you need.

Set up a work profile for an existing account on your device
  1. Make sure that you have the latest version of Google Apps Device Policy on your mobile device. Open the Play Store, search for Google Apps Device Policy, and click Update (if available).
  2. Tap Next in the Google Apps Device Policy to register your device on the server. 
  3. To activate Google Apps Device Policy as a device administrator, tap Activate.
  4. To enforce the device policies for your company, tap Enforce.
  5. (Optional) If prompted, enter device PIN or password.
  6. (Optional) If your device is not already encrypted, you will be prompted to encrypt it.
    Note: You must start encryption with a charged battery and keep your device plugged in throughout the encryption process.
