Upcoming Android Enterprise features

Last updated on May 18, 2021.

This article lists the Android Enterprise features that are in development but not yet released. Planned availability dates are tentative and subject to change.

Android Management API

Programmatic enterprise creation

In the Android Management API there will be a new simplified way to create an enterprise, which doesn’t require users to visit the Managed Google Play sign-up page and doesn’t require a Google account.

Planned availability: Available in the Android Management API in April 2021.

Managed Google Play

Simplified and unified private apps publishing

The private apps publishing requirements and policies will be standardized across all publishing methods: Google Play Console, Managed Google Play iframe, and Google Play Custom App Publishing API.

Regardless of the publishing method used, the following rules will apply:

  • No additional metadata required (description, screenshots, feature graphics, etc). Only the app title will be required.
  • Simplified and fast review process. Your new private apps and updates will be available to install within minutes, instead of hours.
  • Ability to target up to 1,000 organizations.

Planned availability: Available directly in the Play Console for all developers in April 2021. No action required from EMMs.

High priority update mode and postpone update mode

Two new update modes for apps will be made available:

  • High priority - The app is updated as soon as possible after it’s published by the developer. If the device is online, this means the app is updated within minutes.
  • Postpone - Updates are postponed for a maximum of 90 days after the app becomes out of date. 90 days after the app becomes out of date, the latest available version is installed automatically with default priority. After the app is updated it is not automatically updated again until 90 days after it becomes out of date again.

The update mode can be set by the IT administrator per-device and per-app. If no update mode is selected, the default update mode applies: the app is updated when the device is connected to Wi-Fi, charging, and not actively used.

Planned availability: Available in the Android Management API and the Google Play EMM API in June 2021. Contact your EMM to know when this feature will be made available in your management console.

Improvements to the managed configurations iframe

The managed configurations iframe will be improved to address new user needs:

  • It will be possible to leave a property unset in a configuration. Currently a property is always set, either to a non-default value or to its default value (for example a boolean property can be set to true or false). With this change, it will be possible to not set a property (a boolean property can be unset, set to true, or set to false).
  • Property description will support Markdown format for richer content.
  • String properties will support multi-line content.

Planned availability: Available directly in your EMM console in June 2021 if your EMM has integrated with the managed configurations iframe. Contact your EMM to know if they’ve integrated with the managed configurations iframe.

Improvements to private apps search

In the Managed Google Play iframe, the search page will support filtering results to show private apps only. This will make it easier for IT administrators to find the private apps.

Planned availability: Available directly in your EMM console in May 2021 if your EMM has integrated with the Managed Google Play iframe. Contact your EMM to know if they’ve integrated with the Managed Google Play iframe.

Zero-touch

Zero-touch iframe for EMM consoles

EMMs will be able to integrate zero-touch enrollment capabilities in their management console using a new iframe. Using this iframe, IT administrators will be able to link their zero-touch customer account with their EMM and configure their devices so they automatically enroll with their EMM solution.

Planned availability: Available in the Android Management API and the Google Play EMM API in April 2021. Contact your EMM to know when this feature will be made available in your management console.

New redesigned zero-touch reseller portal

The zero-touch reseller portal will get a fresh new look along with new features.

Planned availability: Available to zero-touch enrollment resellers. No release timeline.
