Is it possible to direct a device to connect with a particular hub? 1 Recommended Answer 8 Replies 9 Upvotes

I have a Fire Stixk connected to tv in master bedroom and WiFi hub sitting less than a foot away from it. Yet, the Fire Stick is connecting to a hub that is In my home office 30 feet away.  Is there a way to “force” the Fire Stick to connect to the closer hub?

Adam,

In WiFi, client devices decide which access points to connect to, and if there are multiple bands offered, which one to use. Google WiFi does provide some "hints" to devices in the form of 802.11k and 802.11v, but not all devices support those specifications. Apple devices do. Some (but not all) Samsung devices do. Some (but not all) Windows devices do. It sounds like your Fire Stick does not. This is not uncommon for devices intended to be used in a home.

But, it looks like the Fire Stick does support an Ethernet adapter (https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Ethernet-Adapter-Fire-Devices/dp/B074TC662N). You could use that to connect your Fire Stick directly to the nearby Google WiFi device, which will be much more efficient than going through WiFi twice.

Can we get a fix for this to force the device to connect to a specific access point.  I have the same issue with my Rings devices,, one of my static cameras connects to an access point 30 feet away, when I have one only access point  less than 3 feet away, it wont connect to that one. I have a weak signal on the camera.

Sean,

Any fix for this would have to come from your Ring device maker. Google WiFi is giving devices all the information and support they need to connect to the best access point. Some have just been implemented based on assumptions that home networks won't have more than one access point, and as mesh solutions gain in popularity, that assumption is increasingly flawed. Even if all the Ring devices did was periodically scan for the best signal quality they can hear and switch to that access point, it would dramatically improve the situation.

Thanks for your reply I understand what you’re saying but mesh networks have been around for a while now and what I’m asking for is the fact that if I can reserve an IP address then please can I reserve an access point for the item to connect to by default. It makes no sense that the device is literally 3 feet away and yet connects to one more than 30 feet away and then gives me a poor connection.

Sean,

There is nothing the mesh system can do to change how clients work. The WiFi standards are what they are. Clients that get stuck to an access point or don't pick a good access point to start with are broken. They need to be fixed.

Respectfully disagree with MichaelP.

The problem is when power goes out for the entire house, when power is restored the google APs come up in order--primary first, then the hubs. Devices are connecting to the ONLY AP available--the primary. But, 30 seconds later 2 more hubs come on line. The proper fix would be to have google only start broadcasting SSID after all hubs are online--which is something the primary hub would be able to manage.
