Router defaults to mesh instead of wired connection 0 Recommended Answers 3 Replies 1 Upvote

Hello dear support,

I reported this similar issue over the phone 2 months ago, but didn't get any feedback on resolution and I still see the problem.

So the issue is that google wifi is defaulting to mesh connection over wifi instead of wired.

Connection I have is like this primary - wired - mesh - wired.

You can see that between wired there is a mesh router with a good and reliable connection. The last wired router is in a separate building (garage) where wifi mesh is barely visible. They are connected with good cat6 cable.

If I plug my computer directly to that cable I see connection speeds equal to my broadband - very good. If I plug that ethernet to mesh router most of the time I get barely 1mbps line. Sometimes though in the bad weather for example it happens that garage router can see speeds equal to my broadband which means he cannot establish wifi mesh due to bad receptions and falls back to wired (which should be default behaviour). So this works but instead of defaulting to mesh it should to wired connection.

My workaround currently is that I just removed that garage wifi from existing network and created a new one. Now it's defaulting to wired as it cannot establish a mesh. It's not perfect as it's now a different network and roaming doesn't work, but it will due until there is a fix. Oh and the support agent on the line said to me that this is a known issue and you are working on it. Fingers crossed.

Thank you,
Davor

Hi Davor!

Thanks for reaching out, we are fully aware about this issue and currently working on a fix but we don’t have any timeline yet. However, based on your previous setup, looks like you have the garage wifi point connected via Ethernet cable on the 3rd wifi point which connected wirelessly to the network.

As we’re working on this known issue, in either case, It's typical that a wired connection overrides the wireless connection for the mesh network, so if the garage wifi point is connected via Ethernet it will still use the Ethernet connection (even if shows ‘mesh’ from the app) and since you’re getting expected speed when you hardwired a computer but getting slow speed when re-connected to the garage wifi point, then there’s a possibility that the subject wifi point is not completely updated from that time. We suggest to reconnect the garage wifi point back to the network and follow these few steps.
  • Factory reset your garage wifi point, check on this link 'Factory reset' on how to do the reset.
  • Make sure that the Ethernet cable is connected to the ‘WAN’ (green) port of the 3rd wifi point going to the ‘LAN’ (Gray) port of the garage wifi point.
  • Have your phone connected to the setup network name assigned to the garage wifi point.
  • Go to the phone settings > wifi > on the list of wifi networks, check for a network name that says “setup*****”, tap it and once asked for the password, check on the base of the garage wifi point and look for ‘setup code’ and that serves as the password for the set up network name.
  • Once the phone is connected to the setup network name of that garage wifi point, follow this link to reconnect it to your network - Adding Wifi point(s) to an existing Google Wifi network.
Let us know if this works, we also suggest to send a feedback through the Google Wifi app.

Cheers,
Nhest

Dear Nhest,

I hope you are well, and thank you for the feedback.

I followed your guideline to the letter, thinking this will solve it - I had both wired connections in green ports. Now it's exactly how you wrote.
This absolutely didn't fix my issue, Front Garden wifi point is still connecting via wifi instead of wired connection. This means very slow speeds on a wired connection.
I'll revert back to making this point in another network until you solve this.
Garage wifi point even though showing Weak can still return 30/30 speeds which is more than ok.
Front garden connected via cat6 to Garage returns 3/3.

TLDR; I followed instructions, wifi point is defaulting to wifi mesh instead of wired.

Best regards,
Davor

Switching back to seperate network results in correct speeds (using wired).

Please let me know if I can debug something else for you.

Best,
