Can't find device in Family Wi-Fi

When creating a label, some devices might display some funky names. For example, a phone or computer might be shown as “a738b00002.” If you’re having trouble pinpointing a specific device, here are a few things to try:

Pro tip: The app lists your devices in roughly the order in which you’ve used them. Devices that are currently connected and used most often are towards the top of the list.

1. Finish setup

If you can’t find a device, first add the devices that you do recognize to your label and finish setup.

2. Return to Family Wi-Fi screen

In the settings screen, tap the Family Wi-Fi icon to return to the main Family Wi-Fi screen.

3. Identify your device

All the devices currently and recently connected to your Wi-Fi network will be listed under “Devices.” You have two options here:

(Recommended) Compare MAC address

You can identify a device using the MAC address (a unique identifying number). In the Google Wifi app, tap a device, then the three dots in the upper-right corner. Tap Device details to find the MAC address.

Then look up the MAC address on your desired device. It can usually be found in Settings. If not, try Googling instructions. If the MAC address matches, you found it! Add it to your label.

(Less Recommended) Pause and check

Try pausing a device (e.g. “a738b00002”) and checking if your desired device is paused. You can test this by opening a web browser (like Chrome) to see if it has a connection.

Continue doing this for every unnamed device until you pause the desired device. It’s a bit of trial and error, but it works.

4. Rename your device

Once you find and pause your device, check out how to rename your devices so it’s easier to identify.
