This happens when you set up a new and separate Google Wifi network connected downstream from an existing Google Wifi network, or when you connect a Google Wifi point to any 3rd party router that gives out DHCP addresses in the 192.168.86.0/24 IP network range. Both of these scenarios will change your default Google Wifi point’s local IP network range to 192.168.85.x/24.
This happens because your WAN port needs a different IP address from your LAN subnet. What’s the difference between WAN and LAN?
Change local IP network back to 192.168.86.0/24
To switch the network back to 192.168.86.0/24:
- Open the Google Wifi app .
- Tap Settings and actions tab Network & general Advanced networking LAN.
- Change the “DHCP Address Pool” to the range you want and tap Save. Example: 192.168.86.20 to 192.168.86.250 is the default range.
- Go back to Network & general Wifi points Restart network Ok. This will force reconnection of the clients and new IP addresses to be issued to each of them.
Note: Only changing the WAN IP address or disconnecting from the “upstream” Wifi point (the one between your modem and second Wifi point) will not automatically change the local network back to 192.168.86.0/24.
