Factory reset

Factory resetting your Wifi point(s) will erase all current settings and data. Deleted data is gone forever, and once a factory reset is performed, you’ll have to set up your Wifi point(s) again.

You can factory reset through the app or the hardware button (found on the back of your Wifi point near the base). Learn what each does and when to factory reset.

How do I factory reset my Wifi point?

There are two ways to factory reset your device: through the app or the hardware button. Each method deletes different types of data.

From the app

A factory reset with the app will delete all current settings, data, preferences from your Wifi point, and all data used for Google Wifi’s cloud services. It will also remove your Wifi point(s) from your Google Account.

(A reset can take several minutes and will briefly interrupt your internet settings.)

  1. Open the Google Wifi app.
  2. Tap the tab, then Network settings.
  3. Under the ‘Network’ section, select your Wifi point.
  4. Tap Factory Reset. On the next screen, confirm by tapping Factory Reset.
With the hardware button

A factory reset with the hardware button will delete all current settings, data, and preferences from your device. But all data Google has collected and analyzed for cloud services will remain. After six months, Google will automatically delete this cloud data.

(A reset can take several minutes and will briefly interrupt your internet settings.)

1. Find the factory reset button

Google Wifi: The factory reset button can be found on the back of the device

OnHub from TP-Link: Twist the outer shell counterclockwise and lift to reveal the button, which is located above the power port.
OnHub from ASUS: Look for a small hole above the USB port.

2. Press and hold the factory reset button

Google Wifi

  1. Unplug your Wifi point from power.
  2. Press and hold the factory reset button. While holding down the button, plug the power cable back in. Continue pressing the button for about 10 seconds. Your Wifi point will flash white then blue. When it flashes blue, you can let go of the button.
  3. The Wifi point will continue flashing blue for about 45 seconds, then it'll turn solid blue. This process can take up to 5 minutes.
  4. Once complete, if it's connected to the internet, your Wifi point will pulse blue to indicate that it's ready for setup.

Note: If you hold the button too long (>15 seconds), the device will start flashing orange and not factory reset, in this case, please unplug and try again. 

OnHub

  1. Unplug your OnHub from power.
  2. With the end of a paper clip, press and hold the factory reset button. While holding down the button, plug the power cable back in. Continue pressing the factory reset button for about 10 seconds.
  3. This starts the reset process, which can take up to 5 minutes. Do not remove power during this process.
  4. When complete, your Wifi point will pulse blue.

Note: If you hold the button too long (>15 seconds), the device will start flashing red and not factory reset, in this case, please unplug and try again.

What happens when I factory reset?

With the app: This will restore your Wifi point(s) to factory defaults. Data from your Wifi point(s) and the Google Wifi app (including current settings and any information used for Google Wifi’s cloud services) will be erased. Your Wifi point(s) will also be removed from your Google Account immediately.
With the hardware button: This will delete information from your Wifi point(s) but not your app or cloud. After six months, Google will automatically delete the app and cloud data. If you want to delete this data immediately, factory reset with the app instead.

Note: If a device is left offline for over six months, Google automatically deletes your cloud data. When you plug in your Wifi point again, you’ll have to perform the setup process again.
When do I factory reset?

You might want to do this if you…

  • Are giving your Wifi point to somebody else
  • Are returning it
  • Want to erase all information from your Wifi point
  • Want to start fresh and set up your Wifi point from scratch
