Prioritise a device on your Wi-Fi network

The priority device setting for Nest Wifi Pro, Nest Wifi and Google Wifi in the Google Home app gives a device of your choosing the fastest connection on your Wi-Fi network. When you prioritise a device (like your laptop or Chromecast), your Wi-Fi network reserves more bandwidth for that device to use. This means less buffering and better download speeds for that device.

You might want to do this when you stream a movie on your TV or when you play a game online. To set bandwidth preferences based on activity types, learn more about how to optimise your network for latency-sensitive activities.

Note: Any device on your Wi-Fi network, whether wired directly or connected wirelessly, can be prioritised using this setting. Only one device can be prioritised at a time. When you set a priority device, 70% of your available bandwidth will be allocated to that single device, and any remaining bandwidth will be shared across all other devices. If there isn't sufficient bandwidth to your router from your ISP, this might limit the Wi-Fi speed of your other devices.

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. Tap Favourites  and then Wi-Fi .
  3. Tap Devices and then select the device you want to prioritise and then tap Prioritise device.
  4. At the bottom, select how long you want to prioritise that device.
  5. Tap Save.
