I keep redirecting to Bing?

I am trying to search in my url or the google bar when I open a new tab but I keep getting sent to Bing. I know for sure I have Google set as my default. This is also happening on my Chrome Book where I have never used Bing.

Your computer has been compromised by some sort of malware. It may be as simple as an unwanted browser extension, or more serious. Take a look at your browser extensions and installed programs for anything suspicious.

For Google Chrome browser, just resetting Chrome may fix the problem.

Please refer to this Featured Post for more information:

If the issue persists, try scanning your computer for malware.

You may need to use more than one anti-malware product to detect all malware. Here are some of the more popular/effective products:

HitmanPro

Also, take a look at the many web pages dealing with the subject, such as this one at MalwareTips:

If you feel uncomfortable or unqualified to fully investigate this issue, I suggest you enlist the services of a competent and trusted computer technician.

I just Uninstalled Microsoft Edge after asking me three times if I was SURE. Immediately fixed the problem.  Go to Settings, Apps, Microsoft Edge & Uninstall.

I tried to uninstall Microsoft Edge and it wouldn't uninstall.  I would recheck the list of apps, and sure enough, it would not go away.

If you click on the Microsoft "start" icon lower-left corner click on search.  Do a random search and it will show up in Bing.  That cannot be changed.

I discovered an interesting correlation between this Bing redirect.  It's NOT a "virus" or "malware" as stated by so-called experts on this discussion board.  What I discovered is that it happens only when I am also logged in to a Microsoft account, such as an Office365 or Outlook.com account.  If I log out of all of those accounts, then this Bing search redirect from the browser bar NEVER happens.

This was happening to me, I turned off each chrome extension until I found the one that was doing it... it was a "video downloader" extension for chrome from the chrome store. I never had problems with it until yesterday. On top of redirecting me to bing every time, it was also replacing results in google when I searched in google by going to google.com.

You'd think google would be better at weeding out extensions with malicious stuff in them like that.

I had this problem and just fixed it. Check your browser extensions by clicking the puzzle piece button to the left of the three dots immediately under the window settings. Try removing extensions that seem sketchy. I hope this helps!

Hi there Lokesh 4983,

Can you tell us which Chrome Extension you removed that solved this for you.  Then someone else with the same issue may be helped.

Thanks,

Shannon

For me, I don't THINK it was an extension.  I wrote Malwarebytes to tell them that their program did not detect it.  They kindly wrote me back and had me try a few other programs.  It LOOKS like 'RogueKiller' finally got it, so you'll might give it a try (and, if you do, PLEASE be thoughtful enough to come back and tell others : )

It might be a specific Chrome extension for some people, but in my case that isn't it, because I've also experienced this on CLEAN installs of Chrome, with no extensions installed.

The only thing I've discovered which MIGHT be the issue is that I also have an Office365/Outlook account for my college, and when I do an address bar search in Chrome, IF I'm logged in to that Microsoft account, it redirects to Bing with that account noted in the upper right corner.  If I'm logged OUT of the Microsoft account, I have not noted any of these redirects.  So, I suspect it's something to do with Microsoft hijacking Chrome somehow.

You may have installed a unwanted extension named "Bing Redirect". Somebody should report Bing Redirect on the Chrome Web Store.
