How can I disable the new website icon in the search results? 1 Recommended Answer 100 Replies 619 Upvotes

Why is that website icon now displaying in all my search results? It's very cluttered than it used to be.

When I do a search in Google.com the results are cluttered now. I can't quickly find what I'm looking for and I'm now distracted by the extra graphics. Plus there's less results on the page due to the extra information. When I open a private browsing window the search results are normal.

A Yahoo search seems more clean than Google search now. I've always loved Google for their simplicity. But what happened to the search while logged in?

Google constantly targets random users with experimental variations to the Search and Image Search interfaces. Sometimes the differences are barely noticeable. Other variations are much more noticeable.

You're probably seeing one of these experiments. You could try clearing cache and cookies but, if that doesn't help, there's nothing you can do but wait until Google thinks you've had enough and releases you from the experiment!

As this is a user-to-user community, there's nothing we can do about this. I encourage you to send your feedback direct to Google using the "Send Feedback" link at the bottom of the results page.

Nope — not in any of seven Google accounts.

I just got this stupid experimental update and it's driving me nuts.  If they don't release me from this update I'm probably going to find a new search engine.

I also found this post explaining what they are doing.  More ways to market ads to us, what a shame.

Eh, doesn't quite look like that scenario. This is just a bunch of bull shit added to the search. Even now when I search I don't even look at that crap and just focus on what title of what I'm looking for and click the link. That crap at the top is just extra bullshit not needed.

When I search all I look for is the title of words, and then the content. There's no room for this EXTRA information.

Looks like the new display is actually larger than the old display.
Old format: 644x575
New Format: 644x595

So, you now get LESS/SMALLER information in your search results.

OLD = 644x575

NEW = 644x595

Im stuck in the same boat, my search results are spammed with favicons and its annoying AF.
At this rate Im probably better off logging out of chrome or permanently switching to Brave.

How can I put a search button on my website Shifa Rejuvenation?

Hope they remove these icons soon, it makes impossible to find quickly anything. Or maybe somebody makes and extension that allows to disable icons in search results.

When I have a lot of Google searching to do, I'll switch to monochrome.  That helps me get less distracted by the icons.

icons shown in search pages are distracting me.

The search result icons next to every website in the search results are making it much harder to quickly read through search results, they are very distracting, and are changing what makes Google good in the first place – clean search results without a lot of distracting colors or images. I hope this is not an update that sticks! It's very hard to look through now, I may switch to a different search engine if this becomes a permanent thing!

this experiment is not working well for users that want to search in the result page. it is distracting and irritating to see icons insetad of reading the words of the result and titles. they should add search by icon to have such a feature

EXTREMELY ANNOYING!!!!! Since there is no uniformity for favicons the result is extremely cluttered result page where you can't find shit! Please provide a way to disable this.

Anyone know how to op-out of this, the search result is difficult to navigate. I'm switching to duckduckgo for the mean time until they fix this. It is difficult to manage search result, the uneven spacing and the ugly icon and formatting kills the simplicity of the search result.

Going into Chrome Setting and "Restore settings to their original defaults" fixed it for me. Chrome has done this before a month or two ago. So annoying because I have sync enabled so it does this to every computer I have and use Chrome on and after doing the "Restore settings to their original defaults" I have to log back into every site and many require two-step authentication. It takes a bit of time doing this on 3-4 different machines.

Also, I had to redo any setting I had changed in Chrome and also enable extensions as the restore turned all extension off.

Why does google not give options to easily revert or backpedal such "experiments" I did not ask nor consent (explicitly) to being used as a test subject!!!!

this is extremly annoying..... i cant see anything now.
please @google remove this fast

I have no idea why Google is trying to damage their search engine, adding clutter is something we moved past in the late 90s and early 2000s.
marked this as an answer
I believe you have to clear "cached images and files" as well. fixed mine.

I tried restore setting, all it does is log me out of all my social media accounts, google included, but whenever I log back into my google account, the problem returned. The problem seems to stem from google account itself. If you don't login your google account, this would not appear.

One way to get around that is either by using an adblocker to target that icon (which didn't work for me in Safari) or by using a custom CSS loader (in Safari you can just load a custom .css file to be applied to all sites, but if that's not possible in other browsers, there are plenty of extensions to add custom styles to various websites).

The code you'll want to add is:
.xA33Gc { display: none !important; }

.xA33Gc being the identifier of that favicon.

Add those codes into your installed/favorite adblock extension:

    google.com##.TbwUpd
    google.com##.yWc32e
    google.com##.ab_ctl
    google.com##.fl

Remove google.com##.fl if you dont want keep translate this page URL

change google.com if you using google in your country as like I am using Google Norway.

    google.no##.TbwUpd
    google.no##.yWc32e
    google.no##.ab_ctl
    google.no##.fl

Drive me nuts. Just started for me and EVERYTHING looks like an advert. Is this Google trying to get around the EU Rulings? Will forward this to my MEP (Member of European Partner) that should get it to the European Commission.

This is Google being evil again.

Good practice: let people know when adverts are adverts.
Bad (spiv/illegal??) practice: make users/readers think that advertising is editorial. This is like the British crap free newspapers of the 1990s!!!

So depressing.

Oh my god ... total frustrating ... Google please disable this function .-. please

Looks like this change is starting to roll out into production.  I've had to start using DuckDuckGo instead because they have an option to turn off the site icons and keep the URL where we're all used to seeing it.

is there no option in google to disable the icons? they are very distracting

I signed out of google account and my search results are now without the icon. You could also search using incognito or private session when launching your browser. Hope this helps :)

So what I gather is that this is likely some feature Google is experimenting with and we are at its mercy.
What an ugly mess! Get rid of it...
marked this as an answer
This is ugly as hell, who thought this was a good idea!??!

I actually thought i'd some how ended up on some random malware browser search engine, but nope its just Google....

It looks so messy and most of the icons don't fit well. It's also misaligns the text, really ugly.

I hope it's reverted.
marked this as an answer
Seconding that it looks like a set of malware-influenced search results.  Yikes Google please do away with this and soon.
marked this as an answer
I wish I could personally tell Google how much I hate it

Most terrible change ever seen by Google.

Google,
please turn this annoying feature off and atleast supply the option to do so...

Google, please help me to disable your new experiment.

It looks like this previously experimental layout has now been launched to all users.

This is a user Community — there's nothing we can do to change Google's design decisions.

If you have specific issues with Google Search results, you should send feedback direct to Google. Use the in-app "Send feedback" feature (mobile) or click "Send feedback" at the bottom of any search results page (desktop).

This is disappointing!

We already said NO we do not want this!
But Google did it anyways!

Disgusting!

Wow, got this "update" too, unreadable and less info for the user. Horrible change, also every website description as to be rewritten...
marked this as an answer
I have found that you can't change this in Google settings. Clearing cache and all the other advice did NOT work for me BUT what did is as follows ...

I use the ABP (adblock plus) extension in Chrome - it's great for this kind of thing. It has a function to block elements on webpages, including in the Google search results.

I specifically wanted to hide JUST the favicon image & keep the URL. ABP couldn't do this directly so I wrote a little ABP filter that does this.

Pick what you want to hide and then in the ABP extension go to Options > Advanced > scroll down to My Filter List and starting adding any of the following filters:
  • to remove only URL: add google.com##.iUh30.bc.rpCHfe to the list

  • to remove only favicon: add google.com##.xA33Gc to the list

  • to remove URL, favicon & that little arrow next to the URL: add google.com##.TbwUpd then add google.com###am-b0 and finally add google.com##.GHDvEf.ab_button to the list

  • to remove only the little arrow: add google.com###am-b0 and then add google.com##.GHDvEf.ab_button to the list

  • Refresh and go search for something, effects should should show immediately.

Here's my desired result:
