Voice Match settings grayed out (feature unavailable in your language)

Phone is a LG v30 updated to Oreo 8.0
Assistant/Google Ver. 7.18.50.21.arm64

I want to go into my voice settings and activate "Say OK google at anytime" and "Unlock with Voice Match" but the options are grayed out.

Under "Say Ok Google at any time" it says that this feature isn't supported in your language. I got my LG v30 from a Japanese carrier (live in Japan) and all the settings from system to various input and google settings are set to US or (US) English.

Even if my phone were set to Japanese for language and system settings, voice is supported in the Japanese language.

When I got my phone I went through the typical setup where I say "Ok google" three times and I can use my voice to ask google assistant things after I hold the home button.

I tried uninstalling the google app and deleting cache etc. but it didn't seem to work. I just want to be able to say "OK Google" and use the voice commands hands free.

Thank you!

Hi Gianluca,

Welcome to the Google Search and Assistant Help Forum!

Just to confirm did you try the below mentioned troubleshooting steps one by one that may help resolve the issue:
  1. Restart your device.
  2. Check if the Google app is updated to the latest version? To check, visit Play Store and got to the Google App page. If you see update button, try updating the app that may help resolve this issue.
  3. If the app is updated to latest version, uninstalling the update may help resolve the issue. Here's how: Go to device Settings > Apps or application manager > find Google app> tap on the menu icon (three vertical dots) on top right corner > Uninstall updates.
  4. Try clearing the cache and data of the Google App: Settings > Apps > Google App > Storage > Clear Cache and then tap on Manage Space > Clear All Data. Please note that this will delete all the preferences of the Google App including the widgets.
  5. If that doesn't help, go to Settings > Apps > Google App > Disable. Later you can tap on Enable (If you have an option to uninstall the Google App, please uninstall and reinstall the app.
  6. Restart your device.
Keep me posted.

Best,
Lucas

Hey Lucas, this is Luca here!

I deleted the updates and cleared the cache, after restarting the phone I was prompted to set up Ok Google again and now I can use all the voice options!
Thanks, your fix worked brilliantly!

Now that the voice settings aren't grayed out will it be safe to update the google app or perhaps I shouldn't? I mean if I update it it's not like the app will re-gray ok google's voice settings...will it?

Thanks for your response I look forward to it again!

Hi Gianluca,

Thanks for the update.

I am glad to hear your issue is resolved.

As each update comes with its own fix, I'd suggest you stick with the older version until next update rolls out.

Also, I encourage you report this issue directly to app developers through Google App. To submit Feedback, open Google App > tap on the menu icon on the top left > Send Feedback.

Sending feedback from app allows Google to automatically collect some additional account/app/device information that will allow the Engineers to debug each case-by-case issue. Although you will not receive a reply, they're using this feedback to fix and improve the overall product experience.

Reach out if you have any other questions.

Best,
Lucas

I have had the same issue, I have tried fixing it for 2 days searching on the web and youtube but none of it worked until I found this page with your step by step troubleshooting steps. #3 (If the app is updated to latest version, uninstalling the update may help resolve the issue. Here's how: Go to device Settings > Apps or application manager > find Google app> tap on the menu icon (three vertical dots) on top right corner > Uninstall updates.) was all it needed to fix the issue and I am so happy I have my google assistant back. I was able to retrain my google assistant voice again since it isnt greyed out anymore :) thank you, you are a genius!
