Search Google & send results from your keyboard

You can search Google and send search results right from your device's keyboard using Gboard.

With Gboard you can:

  • Search and send anything from Google, such as nearby restaurants, videos, and weather forecasts.
  • Search and send GIFs, emojis, and stickers.
  • Type with your voice.
  • Use multiple languages in the same conversation.
  • Type faster by sliding your finger from letter to letter with Glide Typing.
Note: If your device uses Android Oreo (Go edition), some of these steps may not work.

Download Gboard

  • Download Gboard from the Play Store.
  • On some Android devices, Gboard is already the default keyboard. To make sure you’re using the latest version, check for an update from the Play Store.

Open Gboard

  1. Open an app, then tap the message field.
  2. Gboard will appear.

Set up Gboard

Add Google Search button

You can do a search right from your keyboard by tapping Google Google . To add this shortcut:

  1. Open Gboard.
  2. At the top left of the keyboard, tap the arrow Keyboard arrow.
  3. Tap More More and thenSettings Settings app and then Search and then turn on Show 'Search and more' button.
Choose languages (optional)

To type in multiple languages, select an option below to choose languages. Note: Some languages aren’t available in Gboard.

Choose languages for your phone

  1. On your device, open the Settings app Settings app.
  2. Scroll down, then tap System and then Languages, input & gestures and thenLanguages and then Add a language.
  3. Add the languages you want.

To remove a language, at the top right tap More More and thenRemove and then select a language and then Remove Remove.

Choose languages for Gboard only

  1. Open Gboard.
  2. At the bottom left, touch and hold the comma and then Settings Settings app and then Languages.
  3. Turn off "Use system languages," then choose the languages you want.

Use Gboard

To search Google or GIFs, connect to Wi-Fi or a cellular network.

Search Google and send results

With Gboard, you can search as you normally do on Google for things like a flight number or videos. Then, you can share your search results.

  1. While in an app, open Gboard.
  2. Tap Google Google .
    If you don’t see the Google button, tap the arrow Keyboard arrow. Then tap Search Search. (Learn how to add the Google button to your keyboard.)
  3. In the search bar, start typing.
  4. Tap an instant result or finish typing, then at the bottom right tap Search Search.
  5. You'll see a search result.
  6. If there are suggestions below the search result, you can tap one to see related information.
  7. Below or next to a search result, tap Share. A link to the page will appear in the message field.
  8. Tap Send Send.
Send emojis, GIFs, and stickers

Send an emoji

  1. Open Gboard.
  2. At the bottom right, tap Emoji Emoji  and then Emoji Emoji .
  3. Tap one or more emojis.
  4. To search for emojis:
    • Type in the "Search emoji" field, then tap Search Search.
    • Or below the emojis, tap an emoji category.
  5. Tap Send Send.

Send a GIF

  1. Open Gboard.
  2. At the bottom right, Emoji Emoji  and then GIF. (If there's a line through "GIF," the app doesn't let you send GIFs.)
  3. To search for GIFs:
    • Type in the "Search GIFs" field, then tap Search Search.
    • Or below the GIF field, tap a GIF category (the gray text).
  4. Tap the GIF you want. It will appear in the message field.
  5. Tap Send Send.

Send a sticker

  1. Open Gboard.
  2. Tap Google Google  and then Stickers Insert sticker.
  3. Tap a sticker to insert it. If you haven't already added stickers, you'll be asked to download a pack.

To add stickers: At the bottom right, tap Emoji Emoji and then Stickers Insert sticker and then Add Add.

Type in multiple languages

After you choose languages, you can type in one language, then type in a different language whenever you want.

Gboard will detect which language you're using and autocorrect, suggest, and predict words in that language.

Translate your text
  1. Open Gboard.
  2. Tap Google Google .
  3. If you don’t see the Google button, tap the arrow Keyboard arrow. (Learn how to add the Google button to your keyboard.)
  4. Tap Translate Google Translate.
  5. Tap the language to translate from.
  6. Tap the language to translate into.
  7. Enter the text to translate. You’ll see an automatic translation. You can tap the translated text to see more translations.
  8. When you’re finished, tap Select Select.
Type with your voice
  1. Open Gboard.
  2. Tap the Microphone Microphone.
  3. Speak your message.
  4. To erase a word, tap Undo Undo.
  5. When you’re finished, tap Send Send.
Type by sliding your finger

You can quickly spell out words by sliding your finger from letter to letter.

  1. Open Gboard.
  2. Slide your finger across the letters of the word you want, then lift your finger.
  3. A word will be entered in the message field. You don't need to tap the space bar between words.
  4. To edit a word, type the changes or choose a suggestion below the message field.
  5. When you’re finished, tap Send Send.



We know what you type on your phone is personal, so we've designed Gboard to keep your private info private.

What Gboard sends to Google

  • Your searches are sent to Google's web servers to give you search results.
  • Usage statistics are sent to let us know which features are used most often and to help us understand problems.

What Gboard doesn't send to Google

  • Anything you type other than your searches, like passwords or chats with friends, isn't sent. Saved words on your device aren’t sent. You can delete saved words any time.
Delete saved words

To help you with spelling and to predict searches you might be interested in, Gboard saves the words you type. These words are saved only to your device. You can delete saved words whenever you want.

  1. Open Gboard.
  2. At the bottom left, touch and hold the comma and then Settings Settings app and then Dictionary and then Delete learned words.
  3. To confirm that you want to permanently delete these words, enter the number provided.
  4. Tap OK.
