See info about what's on your screen

You can hold down your Home button to get information about what's on your screen.

Turn screen search on or off

Screen search is available for Android devices with both:

  • Android 6.0 or higher
  • Language set to English, Japanese, German, Spanish, Italian, French, Korean, Portuguese, or Russian
Turn on

Touch and hold the Home button. Then follow the steps.

Turn off
  1. Open the Google app Google Search.
  2. In the top left, tap Menu Menu and then Settings and then Screen search.
  3. Turn off "Screen search."

Use screen search

  1. On any screen, touch and hold the Home button.
  2. Google uses what's on your screen to show you related info, apps, and actions.
Select text to search

You can select one or more words you want info about. You'll need Google app 5.13 or higher to use this feature.

  1. Touch and hold the Home button.
  2. At the bottom of your screen, tap Select text Select text.
  3. Tap a word.
  4. To select more words, drag the blue dots.
  5. Google will show you info about the text you selected.
Search by image or camera

You can search images you see on your screen, or search by pointing your camera at an image you want info about. Learn more about things like artwork, landmarks, and text inside images.

You'll need Google app 5.13 or higher to use this feature. This feature works best with large images, not small images. 

Search by image

  1. When there’s an image on your screen, touch and hold the Home button.
  2. Google will show you info about the image.

Search from camera

  1. On your device, open the camera.
  2. Point your camera at an image.
  3. Touch and hold the Home button.
  4. Google will show you info about the image.
Translate text on your screen

For most languages, you can translate text on any screen into your phone’s default language. This won’t work if your phone’s default language is Japanese or Korean. You’ll need Google app 5.14 or higher to use this feature.

  1. Touch and hold the Home button.
  2. Touch Translate this screen.

Ways to use screen search

  • Restaurants: Find restaurants and other points of interest mentioned on screen.
  • Movies: See reviews and info about a cast using the film name.
  • Music: Get details about a song or artist from within your app.
  • People: Learn about famous people and celebrities in the news.
  • Images: Get info about artwork, product logos, landmarks, and more.

Note: When you use Now on Tap, you generate search results that you can manage at your Web & App Activity page.

Troubleshoot problems

When I touch and hold the Home button I go to the Google app

If you're taken to the Google app when you touch and hold the Home button, that means screen search is either turned off, or isn't available for your device's language. To turn it on, follow the instructions above.

"Screen search cannot be enabled" error

If you see this message, your work or school's domain administrator needs to turn on web history for your group before you can use screen search.
