Ways to delete your Web History

Delete individual past searches

You can delete individual searches from your Web History instead of deleting all of your Web History.

  1. Visit your Web History page at google.com/history.
  2. Check the box next to the searches you want to remove.
    Tip: Search your Web History using the search box at the top of the page. You can also filter your history by categories like Web, Images, and Videos using the links on the left.
  3. Click Remove items at the top of the page.

You can delete all of your past searches from your Web History. However, removing individual searches may be more beneficial than clearing your entire Web History, since your history helps you get better results and recommendations.

  1. Visit your Web History page at google.com/history.
  2. In the top right corner of your Web History page, click the gear  > Settings.
  3. Click Delete all, then click the Delete all button to confirm.

Turn off Web History to prevent future searches from being stored
Tip: If you occasionally want to prevent your searches from being saved, you can search within an incognito window in Google Chrome while not signed in to your Google Account. If you're using a browser other than Google Chrome, check your browser's help instructions to see whether it has a similar private browsing mode.

  1. Visit your Web History page at google.com/history.
  2. In the top right corner of your Web History page, click the gear  > Settings.
  3. Click Turn off.

Web History items you’ve deleted may show up in your Account Activity report if the information was saved by Account Activity before you deleted it.

If your Web History is still showing after you’ve deleted it, try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies. If clearing your cache and cookies doesn’t fix the problem, follow the steps below:

  1. Follow the instructions above to delete all past searches.
  2. Click your picture or the email address in the top right corner of the page.
  3. Click Sign out.
  4. Sign in to your account again at accounts.google.com.

What happens to your history when it's deleted

When you delete items from your Web History, they are no longer associated with your Google Account. However, Google may store searches in a separate logs system to prevent spam and abuse and to improve our services.
