Instant results aren’t appearing

If results aren’t appearing as you type, use the tips below to help you troubleshoot Google Instant.

First, check your settings

You won't see results as you type if Google Instant is turned off. To turn on Google Instant, change your settings:

  1. Visit the Search settings page.
  2. Under "Google Instant predictions," choose when Google should show you results as you type.
    Instant settings
  3. Click Save to update your settings for this computer or tablet.
Go to the Search settings page
If you’ve turned off Google Instant but it keeps turning on again, learn why your search settings might not be saving.

Check if speed is the issue

To prevent a slower search experience, you’ll only see predictions if your computer network is fast enough.

Test to see if speed is the issue

Here's how to test if speed is preventing you from seeing Google Instant results.

  1. Visit the Search settings page.
  2. Under "Google Instant predictions," choose when Google should show you results as you type.
    Instant settings
  3. Click Save to update your settings for this computer or tablet.
  4. Look at the gray text that appears beneath Only when my computer is fast enough.

If you see Instant is currently on for web search, speed is not the issue.

If you see Instant is currently off for web search, speed is the problem.

Ways to improve your speed
  • Upgrade to the latest version of your browser.
  • Avoid running large programs, like streaming movies, in the background.
  • Upgrade to a newer computer.
  • Upgrade to a faster and more reliable Internet connection. For example, if you have a dial-up Internet connection, try switching to a broadband Internet connection.

Try typing more

You’ll only see results as you type if our algorithm is confident that the results will be useful. So if you're not seeing Google Instant results after typing the first few letters of your search, try typing a few more. If that doesn't work, you may need to press Enter to see results.

Results aren’t always shown for potentially inappropriate searches

You may not see instant results if the results are potentially inappropriate. If this happens, you’ll see a message asking you to press Enter to see your results.

Other reasons instant results might not appear

  • You search from a page that's not the Google homepage or a search results page.
  • You use an Internet browser that's not one of these supported browsers: Firefox 3+, Safari 5+, Internet Explorer 9+, or Google Chrome 5+.
  • You’re on a Google domain or language that Google Instant doesn’t support.
