Change your Google app location settings

You can change your location settings used by the Google App, including Location History and your home and work addresses.

Location History

Location History stores your location data from all devices that are signed in to your Google Account and have Location Reporting turned on.

The Google app uses your past locations to do things like show you traffic updates for your daily commute by learning the route you take to work.

Turn Location History on or off

You can manage your Location History in two ways. Either by using your phone's browser or through the Google app.

Use your phone's browser

  1. Visit the Activity controls page.
  2. Pause or turn on Location History:
    • Pause: Turn off Location History and then tap Pause.
    • Turn on: Turn on Location History and then tap Turn on.

Use the Google app

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google app Google app.
  2. At the bottom right, tap More More and then Settings and then Privacy and security and then Location and then Location History.
    • To turn on Location History, turn on the switch.
    • To turn off Location History, turn off the switch and tap Stop storing location.

Note: When you pause Location History, it doesn't delete previous activity, it only stops saving new location information.

View your Location History
  1. On your iPhone or iPad, visit the Location History page.
  2. At the top left under "Timeline," choose the time period you want to see your Location History for.
Delete your Location History
  1. On your iPhone or iPad, visit the Location History page.
  2. In the bottom right of the page, tap Settings Settings and then Delete all location history.
  3. Check the box next to "I understand and want to delete all Location History."
  4. Tap Delete Location History.

Note: Other apps by Google might have their own Location Reporting settings. If you turn off Location Reporting off for the Google app, it doesn't affect settings in those other apps. If another app by Google is reporting your location, that location info may also be used by other Google products, like Discover on the Google app.

Location Services

Location Services is a setting on your iPhone or iPad that lets your device share its location with the apps you use. If Location Services is turned off, Location Reporting and Location History won’t work.

I see a "Location Services is off" card

Follow the steps below to turn Location Services on:

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Privacy and then Location Services.
  3. Turn on Location Services.
  4. Scroll down, and then tap Google and then Always.
