With the AI Mode experiment in Google Search, you can ask anything and get a helpful AI-powered response with the ability to explore further with follow-up questions and helpful web links. This new AI Mode expands what AI Overviews can do with more advanced reasoning, thinking and ways of interacting. This experience is particularly helpful for queries where deeper exploration, reasoning, or comparisons are needed. We’re introducing this new mode as an opt-in experiment in Labs to collect feedback from people who want to test out this early experience.
We designed AI Mode in Search to help people ask new questions and connect them with the breadth of content and perspectives across the web. This experiment relies on Google Search's deep understanding of web information, meaning that responses are supported by high quality web sources to improve factuality. In some cases, AI Mode will provide a set of web links if there’s not high enough confidence in the quality or helpfulness of an AI-powered response. As with any early-stage AI product, AI Mode doesn’t always get it right. For example, in some cases this experiment may misinterpret web content or miss context, as can happen with any automated system in Search. When this does happen, we encourage you to give feedback through thumbs up / thumbs down so we can continuously improve.
As we continue to test this new mode, we’ll expand its functionality, update the user interface and introduce new ways to help people access and engage with the web.

How data helps Google develop generative AI in Search
To develop and improve generative AI experiences in Search and the related machine learning technologies, Google uses people's interactions with Search and these AI experiences. This can include interactions like what people search for and what feedback they provide to Google. With user feedback and human reviews, we evaluate and improve the quality of our results and products responsibly.
When trained reviewers work to improve the quality of Search’s machine learning models, we take a number of precautions to protect users’ privacy:
- Data that reviewers see and annotate are disconnected from users’ accounts.
- Automated tools help recognize and remove a broad range of identifying info and sensitive personal information.
