Get AI-powered responses with AI Mode in Google Search

AI Mode is Google’s most powerful AI search experience. You can ask anything and get an AI-powered response, with the ability to go deeper through follow-up questions and helpful links to the web. AI Mode expands what AI Overviews can do with more advanced reasoning and ways of interacting. It divides your question into subtopics and searches for each one simultaneously. This way, AI Mode can explore the web to find even more relevant content that matches your question.

AI Mode relies on Google Search's deep understanding of web information, meaning that responses are supported by high quality web content to improve factuality. In some cases, AI Mode will provide a set of web links if there’s not high enough confidence in the quality or helpfulness of an AI response. As with any early-stage AI product, AI Mode doesn’t always get it right. When this does happen, we encourage you to give feedback through thumbs up / thumbs down so we can continuously improve.

We’ll continue to refine AI Mode, expand its functionality, update the user interface and introduce new ways to help people access and engage with the web.

How AI Mode works

With AI mode, you can ask anything and get a comprehensive AI-powered response with links to explore further. You can ask questions that might have previously taken multiple searches – like exploring a new concept or comparing options – and you can ask follow-up questions. AI mode uses a “query fan-out” technique, dividing your question into subtopics and searching for each one simultaneously across multiple data sources. It then brings those results together to provide an easy-to-understand response. Learn more about AI Mode and AI Overviews in Search.

As with any early-stage AI product, AI Mode doesn’t always get it right. For example, in some cases AI Mode may misinterpret web content or miss context, as can happen with any automated system in Search.

How to double-check responses:

  • Always check important info in more than one place. Click the links for AI sources and try other Google Search results too. Learn more about how to evaluate info you find with Google.
  • Ask multiple versions of your question to get the best answers. Try asking for different opinions or ask for more details.
  • Send feedback to Google if something doesn’t look right. Your feedback helps us improve AI Mode for everyone.

How data helps Google develop generative AI in Search

To develop and improve generative AI experiences in Search and the related machine learning technologies, Google uses people's interactions with Search and these AI experiences. This can include interactions like what people search for and what feedback they provide to Google. With user feedback and human reviews, we evaluate and improve the quality of our results and products responsibly.

When trained reviewers work to improve the quality of Search’s machine learning models, we take a number of precautions to protect users’ privacy:

  • Data that reviewers see and annotate are disconnected from users’ accounts.
  • Automated tools help recognize and remove a broad range of identifying info and sensitive personal information.
