After an earthquake happens in your area, you can search “Earthquake in [your city or region]” or “Earthquake near me” on Google Search. In some cases, Google might show you an Earthquake Alerts search result card.
The search results card tells you:
- Whether there were reports of shaking in your area.
- Steps you can take after an earthquake.
Get alerts for nearby earthquakes
Your Android phone can send you alerts about nearby earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 and above. Your phone uses your approximate location to send info about an earthquake’s magnitude and distance from where you are. Learn more about nearby earthquake alerts.
Where the data comes from
The Android Earthquake Alerts System uses device and sensor data from Android phones that have Google Location Accuracy turned on in areas where shaking from a nearby earthquake is detected.
To stop your Android phone from contributing to earthquake detection, turn off Google Location Accuracy.
