Hi, my site has much more content for desktop then mobile. Is it possible to disable mobile first indexing in order to keep good indexing for desktop?

My website contains free software for people to download and install on desktops and laptops.  That is not the type of activity mobile users would be engaging in.  Yet Google has decided that my site will be crawled as mobile first.  It would be handy for website owners to give Google a hint about which device type will find the content most useful.  This is a case where Google's automated decision is not appropriate.

Can you consider allowing webmasters the ability to hint which type of indexing should have priority?  Either that, or modify your algorithm so if you see web page after web page on a site that contains links to downloadable tarballs, etc., that Google categorize it as more appropriate for desktops?

If you use HTTP redirection (301) to redirect traffic from mobile user-agents to a different site (i.e. from www.mysite.com to m.mysite.com), and that the mobile site's robots.txt prevents indexing, then Google will not be able to index the site at all. It happened for a site of mine and the only way to fix it was to change the redirect condition to exclude any Googlebot user-agent.

In my scenario, I only wanted the Desktop site to be indexed by Google, and that was on purpose.

On that very specific question, please check out John Mueller's very full answer in this new YouTube video, which expands a little bit on Barry's earlier answer.
