Best practices to index product variants with same content and different urls 1 Recommended Answer 8 Replies 2 Upvotes

I wonder how are best practices representing product variants in different urls with same content? All urls are listed in sitemap, and there is a selector for variantes wich changes location for every variant. I guess this is not the best practice, but can't figure out a better one. Thanks in advance,

Hi there.
Please check rel canonical.
"If you have (...)  different pages with similar content (..)  Google sees these as duplicate versions of the same page. Google will choose one URL as the canonical version and crawl that, and all other URLs will be considered duplicate URLs and crawled less often"
I hope that helps :)

Thanks Sebastian and Nikolaj.

So, we have two possible best practicas.

Best Practice 1
================
product-1234-black.html - INDEX, FOLLOW
product-1234-red.html - NOINDEX, FOLLOW
product-1234-blue.html - NOINDEX, FOLLOW

Best practice 2
================
product-1234-black.html - CANONICAL => self
product-1234-red.html - CANONICAL => black
product-1234-blue.html - CANONICAL => black

Which would you say is best? Thanks in advance.

These options depend on the goal you want to achieve. Therefore, you yourself must determine the option that suits you. Read more Robots meta tag, data-nosnippet, and X-Robots-Tag specifications of Google.

Hi.
Yes :)
PS
You can always provide different descriptions for a red and a blue product - it is difficult (requires a lot of effort) BUT you can do it for e.g. most bought products and observe what will happen :)

Thanks to all experts. I've learned a lot here.

Actually my question was asked after being aware of content duplication problems, or indeed because of knowing that. I wondered how Google was solved a common real world issue. Almost half of product pages in online stores have variants and most of them launch a distinct url to each variant.

I now consider the problem solved and my question answered. Thanks a lot, this community is really great. Best regards.

If you do not try to make a life for Googlebot easier it will chose what to index and what not to index.
That's why it is better to think if we can reduce the number of urls - e.g. create one page for product_A with a description in how many colouer variants it is available - and not creating 100 pages for this product that have the same description exept of colour.  You can use canonical, of course but remember that Google is not oblioged to pick up the canonical you chosen AND if you have a lot of pages than Googlebot is spending more time on duplicated pages what can result in not putting new products into index.
PS
Thanks for nice words, we really appreciate it :)
