The day after the broad core algorithm update (June 3rd) we saw a massive drop in Search traffic from Google (lost 50% of daily traffic). This was a drop over the course of 24-hours and we have not made any changes to the site. Further, we saw our Discover traffic drop by 90% and has not improved. This is across all verticals, devices, AMP and Non-AMP.

What's bizarre is that we have a much more pronounced decline in the UK vs. the US. This is weird b/c the UK is our home region and historical drops have always been much more prominent in the US.
Further, on June 2nd we saw a blip for a few hours when our Google Bot traffic almost disappeared, before returning again. Could possibly be related? On the same day traffic from google-mediapartners shot up for a short while before returning to normal.
The Daily Mail website is pure garage from a SEO point of view, I will list several things:
1. Run your website in Lighthouse it takes over 12 seconds to load a web page.
2. You have covered your website with far too many adverts.
3. You have covered your website with so many sexy girl images it is almost an adult website.

I think many of you are looking at this the wrong way. Google doesn't know every single outcome of an algorithm change. The results become apparent after release and over time. But let's focus on what is a "punishment" (a manual action taken by Google) versus the result of the application of an algorithm and why movement in search rankings can occur.
Let's say that yesterday Google's algorithm didn't pick up someone creating a certain type of artificial backlink. A website taking advantage of this forbidden but unenforced practice would still benefit since the activity was not yet caught and curtailed by Google. Today Google patches the algorithm and it detects these artificial backlinks and, as a result, the website which wrongfully had the benefit of these backlinks lost them -- along with the 50% traffic boost which they gave the site. To the site owner, the bad practice may not be apparent as it could have been done months earlier and by an unethical SEO that is no longer with the company. To the site owner this appears to be a significant punishment -- but it actually isn't. It's a proper adjustment.
Another example is that an algorithm or other technical fix which can also expose a mistake that a site owner has made and, as a result, impacts the site's search visibility. Perhaps yesterday errors made on the site by the webmaster were undetected or treated in a manner which were beneficial for the site but technically incorrect. Once the technical error is corrected and a stricter but proper treatment is applied, the site may suffer when Google recrawls and this will appear as a "punishment" to the site owner but it really is just the result of an unidentified error which should be corrected.
There are many scenarios. My point is that I think it is a better approach to keep an open mind as to the potential explanations for movement in ranking and be patient before coming to premature conclusions about causation.

A drop in rankings isn't a "punishment". Google is a website, like any other website. It focuses on its users. And what it's trying to do is get the results *it* thinks is best to its user. You wouldn't want somebody coming in to your website and telling you what to publish, right? Same with Google. If it decided to show only three websites in its search results (say, Amazon, Wikipedia and Pinterest), it would be well within its rights to do so. (It would lose lost of users, of course! :-) I wouldn't want to see only three websites in my search results. If they did that, I'd go elsewhere).
Google is under no obligation to warn anybody about rankings. They don't even know what's going to rank. They just want the sites to be useful, high quality and answer the user's question.

Did you see any hints of problems in the Google Search Console? Are all the sitemaps submitted OK?
If you try a few important URLs with the URL Inspection tool and live test, is all OK?
Have a look also at the robots.txt tester tool.
It might be unrelated to the drop in search results, but you have a subdomain called jobs that redirects status 301 to the jobsite website, so all links to your subdomain are passed to the jobsite website, that is a general website.
Maybe ask them to create a subfolder for your site and redirect your subdomain to their subfolder, at least it would be to content related specifically to your site, even if links to your subdomain pass so-called link juice to their site.
Also, your site has a games subdomain, where https URLs redirect status 301 to http URLs. It might not be important, but usually the redirect is the other way, http to https.
Another thing that might not be related, your favicon can seem, at a quick look in search results on the small screen of a phone, a bit like an old-style ad marker.
And favicons started to appear in search results quite recently.
It might be nothing, and anyway you cannot change the favicon.

Hey I took a quick look and in 10 mins I found millions of spammy duplicate content pages. Take the news content that's surfaced on the state level pages for example. This is all auto generated content spam. Also take note that you have a jobs subdomain with only 13 indexed pages. You probably got hit hard there (based on low indexed pages count) because its all scraped and unoriginal content. It took me less time to figure all that out than it did to write this comment. So take it with a grain, but based on this quick and dirty look under the hood, my hunch is that Google will announce that the core update had to do with removing unoriginal duplicate content from its index. Think of it as like a Panda update for 2019. But we shall see. Can anyone from Google confirm if this hypothesis is correct? Google cleaned up auto generated scraped or syndicated content and removed it from the index.. right?!?

The Daily Mail sources most of it's content directly from Associated Press, as do many news websites. Infact, the AP relies on algorithms to generate some of it's content. It's been going on for a long time.
The daily mail doesn't rewrite many of these articles. Neither do some other news websites. And even if they do spin up the content from it's original they do such a poor job at it. Google can easily spot these sorts of articles. They've put a lot of effort into trying to stop duplicate content because of tools like article spinners and auto rewriters. Black hat marketers used such techniques to generate traffic easily.
Lest we not forget that the Daily Mail still pushes clickbait, and controversial topics on race, religion and politics.
I'm willing to be this is why the site took a large hit. A lack of original content.

As other have stated, the site is breaking numerous Google best practices which might have caused it to dip during the latest June core update. In fact, it's surprising that the site hasn't already been hit by any of the previous updates.

Do you remove ads and risk a further loss in revenue when you have employees relying on you? Do you focus on a responsive design which could take weeks (if not months) if that's not the main issue?

I've been to the site and respect that it is a well known publication which does make efforts to compile a comprehensive amount of information on "hot topic" news items. That said, I have to wonder whether the drop is ongoing or just an initial blip and then a gradual settling to where Google ultimately will rerank the site's position. We are talking about a very short period of time above.
That said, many other sites have resorted to ad heavy pages or specifically where an advertisement auto-loads and is sometimes difficult or unable to be stopped immediately (Huffington Post, espn to a lesser extent.) Consider the sliding scale of intrusion to content and how Google may choose to treat more intrusive advertising sources which can certainly impact upon user experience (in addition to potential eyeballs but is it effective advertising? That is digression.)
Page load time is very long, even though accommodations have been made to make the visible portion appear well before the load is complete.
On one hand I appreciate the nature of the audience to which this appeals. On the other, consider the ROI on having all that excess promotion around the article, both internal and ads. I have to wonder whether the popularity of the site works both for and against the forces of the content surrounding the story.

There are ton of interwoven reasons, but what you are requesting doesn't scale, not all sites have points of contact or are registered in the GSC (Google Search Console) or utilize the GSC in a way that would be useful to disseminate information.
And if you think about it, why should Google provide information to X site but refuse to provide the same information to Y site because Y is someway less desirable or favorable, such as a known spammer hosting malware?
If you notice, there are few Googlers responding on the forum other than read ABC post or maybe answering a goofy technical question. Again, trying to help every site while remaining neutral in the process isn't very easy to do.

We propose Automatic Sanctions tab in GSC to guide webmasters after a period of time at least. A punishment can't be forever.
Also manual actions are noticed by GSC so a website with manual Action applied if no has GSC is the same than if Google decide notify in GSC algoritmic sanctions applied to websites represented by companies in the markets Google, don't forget it, manage and control. With the goal of guide webmasters and they can focus in our case in produce better and quality articles instead in SEO.
There are companies registered in Google My Business, and I'm a defender of that shouldn't be any difference between a manual action and algorithm sanction, why no notice both if Google has data of both and both are sanctions?
Is a doable point between sanction spammers and hackers and difference from sanction innocent companies should focus in monetize their products and not in be blind when are penalized by Panda Penguin etc.
I think when Google decide to apply this and guide in GSC of algorithmic sanctions applied are in their system, the image of Google will improve a lot in the community and is fully compatible with get out spammers of serps, and doable.

A drop in rankings isn't a "punishment". Google is a website, like any other website. It focuses on its users. And what it's trying to do is get the results *it* thinks is best to its user. You wouldn't want somebody coming in to your website and telling you what to publish, right? Same with Google. If it decided to show only three websites in its search results (say, Amazon, Wikipedia and Pinterest), it would be well within its rights to do so. (It would lose lost of users, of course! :-) I wouldn't want to see only three websites in my search results. If they did that, I'd go elsewhere).
Google is under no obligation to warn anybody about rankings. They don't even know what's going to rank. They just want the sites to be useful, high quality and answer the user's question.

You are assuming a "penalty" applies. Penalties are directed actions. Google change their algorithm which apply to all sites equally. And that new algorithm values another site (or sites) greater than your site. To use the old Amit Singhal analogy, your site doesn't have enough pink text or the other site has more blue text. Or your heatmap of ads de-emphasizes content in a way that the other site does not (something that has been alluded to in prior comments on this thread). Most likely it is a combination of 42 factors, thus it is not one thing but a lot of things that impact your site versus your competition.
In a manner of speaking your better mouse trap has been replaced by a newer, better mousetrap. You will need to go back to the drawing board to find better ways to clickbait for visitors and fool Google in the process. When you are successful, your mouse trap will return to the top of search results for crap news.

I think many of you are looking at this the wrong way. Google doesn't know every single outcome of an algorithm change. The results become apparent after release and over time. But let's focus on what is a "punishment" (a manual action taken by Google) versus the result of the application of an algorithm and why movement in search rankings can occur.
Let's say that yesterday Google's algorithm didn't pick up someone creating a certain type of artificial backlink. A website taking advantage of this forbidden but unenforced practice would still benefit since the activity was not yet caught and curtailed by Google. Today Google patches the algorithm and it detects these artificial backlinks and, as a result, the website which wrongfully had the benefit of these backlinks lost them -- along with the 50% traffic boost which they gave the site. To the site owner, the bad practice may not be apparent as it could have been done months earlier and by an unethical SEO that is no longer with the company. To the site owner this appears to be a significant punishment -- but it actually isn't. It's a proper adjustment.
Another example is that an algorithm or other technical fix which can also expose a mistake that a site owner has made and, as a result, impacts the site's search visibility. Perhaps yesterday errors made on the site by the webmaster were undetected or treated in a manner which were beneficial for the site but technically incorrect. Once the technical error is corrected and a stricter but proper treatment is applied, the site may suffer when Google recrawls and this will appear as a "punishment" to the site owner but it really is just the result of an unidentified error which should be corrected.
There are many scenarios. My point is that I think it is a better approach to keep an open mind as to the potential explanations for movement in ranking and be patient before coming to premature conclusions about causation.
