Google offers to translate my page when not necessary (thinks my page is in a different language) 1 Recommended Answer 13 Replies 20 Upvotes

I have a website in a Nordic language, on the home page alone, when I search it in that language it displays the "translate this page" link, once I click it, Google Translate attempts to "translate" the page from my original Nordic language to it (in a loop).

When I search this page with Google's language set to English it doesn't display the "translate this page" link.

Makes me suspect Google thinks my page is in English when it doesn't at all.

Does anyone know what can be done?

Hi there!
You mean in Google Chrome?  If so, then this sounds more like an issue for Google Chrome to answer: https://support.google.com/chrome/community?hl=en
When it comes to Googlebot itself, the hreflang tag helps Googlebot figure things out:  https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/189077?hl=en
I don't know if Google Chrome uses hreflang to determine whether it kicks in or not.  You'd have to ask in their forum.

Hi, no, not in Google Chrome, in any web browser on the SERP. I have the meta tags set correctly, still, no use.

Hi there!
Your question is best asked in the Google  Search forum then: https://support.google.com/websearch/community?hl=en
This isn't a Google Search Console question.

Check the value of the tag lang on your web pages.

I'm saying it does offer to translate the page when it shouldn't, and I'm worried it did affect my rankings because once that link appeared, my homepage lost 50% of traffic
