How to separate Product Name and SKU

I will either use https://domain.com/product/product-name-SKU or https://domain.com/product/product-name/SKU as the product URL.

I know that the first one is much more commonly used, but I have 40K+ SKUs with an exceptional format and using / instead of - makes things much easier for backend.

Although I can't see why it would make a huge difference, using / between product name and SKU seems a bit odd, and I want to make sure that it will not harm my SEO traffic.

Thank you!

I'm assuming you already have a nice sized footprint using SKU-based URLs. I'd stick with it for the following reason. Opinions might vary.

Personally I don't think it would make a huge difference. It used to make a larger difference due to reasons not actually related to the search engine. For example, before typical web software would convert URLs to include the title of the hyperlink rather than pure URL, it was useful when users saw acme-widget-sink-large-1234.htm than -sku-234556.htm and that was the major 'boost.' Right now, I don't think it will make much of any difference to Google and, worse, you'll need to then create 301 redirects on thousands of URLs which is not something I think anyone would really want to maintain.
