Hreflang Attribute when we have different sites for languages

We have separate websites for each language, each hosted on different domains. I understand how to add language tags, but I'm unsure about adding the `x-default` tag across these websites. Here's an example to illustrate:

- www.test.com for the US
- www.test.co.uk for the UK
- www.test.de for Germany
- www.test.fr for France

If I'm on the French website, should I add the `x-default` tag to the French site itself, or should it be added to the US site (considering English's popularity)?

Well whichever decide as x-default, would use the same one on all of them!

All UR:s in the 'set' should have the same hreflang links.

In your example, x-default would be defining where to set users from other countries (not US/UK/Germany/France)

For example could have a .int domain, which is just for disabligion. Lets user choose which of the 4 sites to goto. (it can also be a page on one of the existing domains, doesnt 'need' a whole seperate domain)

Hi Sarath,

The URL you specify for the x-default fallback URL should be the same for all annotations in the hreflang cluster.

So for you, set this on all the domain versions:

rel="alternate" href="https://www.test.com" hreflang="x-default"

It doesn't matter if they are on different ccTLDs (just be consistent). It's a common mistake to assign the x-default to the same ccTLD URL version (that's where the canonical tag helps).

You were right from the beginning thinking to target all English speakers worldwide.

Hope that helps.
