How to integrate references in schema markup correctly on my Aboutme-page 0 Recommended Answers 7 Replies 37 Upvotes

Hi,
I'm just updating my "Aboutme"-page and added some references like a legal allowance as holistic alternative healer, course certificate, radio interview, pdf-article, online-article, my book ect.

So there is "Person" as top-level-item now in my schema code and I wonder how to implement these references there.  Mainly I have linked digital copies of the references on the page, some of them are linked online directly (my book and an article in a magazin, both on other domains).

Here in the forum I found a similar example of a psychotherapist and prof. counselor, who also uses digital copies for his references of "LocalBusiness" (code is shortened):
<script type="application/ld+json">{
    "@context": "http://schema.org",
    "@type": "LocalBusiness",
    "image": "https://gatehealing.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Therapy-office.jpeg",
    "taxID": "xx-xxxxxxxxx",
    "naics": "62133",
    "founder":{
    "name": "Jonathan F. Anderson",
    "alumniOf":{
      "@type": "EducationalOrganization",
      "name": "University of Minnesota",
      "description": "I am a graduate of the University of Minnesota and earned a Masters Degree in Counseling  Psychology (CSPP)",
      "sameAs": "https://twin-cities.umn.edu/",
      "image": {
        "@type": "ImageObject",
        "contentUrl": "https://gatehealing.com/wp-content/uploads/Jonathan-F-Anderson-Masters-Degree.jpeg",

        "width": "1143",
        "height": "924"
    }
  },
  "memberOf": "International Critical Incident Stress Foundation",
  "image": {
        "@type": "ImageObject",
        "contentUrl": "https://gatehealing.com/wp-content/uploads/Jonathan-F-Anderson-Criticial-Incident-Advanced-Certificate.jpeg",
        "width": "1196",
        "height": "924"
    }
  },
   "mainEntityOfPage":{
  "@type": "CreativeWork",
  "license": "https://gatehealing.com/wp-content/uploads/Jonathan-F-Anderson-LPC-2018-License-Renewal.jpeg",
  "description": "I am fully licensed by the State of Texas as a Licensed Professional Counselor with Supervisor status",
  "sameAs": "https://www.dshs.texas.gov/counselor/lpc_search.shtm"
  },
}</script>

I could implement my course certification similar to the Masters Degree above as "alumniOf" the school, but is it really correct, to place the digital copy (...degree.jpeg) as image-property of "EducationalOrganization"? Doesn't this mean that it is an image of the university, instead of an certification of me as alumniOf? The certification-jpeg should be connected to me and not to the university, shouldn't it?
Or do I have a wrong understanding of schema rules?

Thanks for anybody helping me to integrate my references correctly.

Martin

Thanks for the great question.
 It may be useful to use the type PresentationDigitalDocument . E.g.:

{
    "@context": "http://schema.org",
    "@type": "Person",
     "name": "The name",
     "alumniOf":{
      "@type": "EducationalOrganization",
      "name": "University of ZZZ",
      "description": "I am a zzz",
      "sameAs": "https://twin-cities.umn.edu/",
      "award":"a short description of the award, such as a diploma",
      "subjectOf":{
      "@type": "PresentationDigitalDocument",
        "image": {
        "@type": "ImageObject",
        "contentUrl": "https://example.com/images/diplomaimagee.jpeg",
        "width": "1143",
        "height": "924"
        }
      }
    }
}
Please note that the property award that describes your diploma is used here. But this is not a requirement.

Hi Nikolaj,
nice to meet you again.

I'm not sure if "award" and "presentationDigitalDocument" are the right things here.

I try to explain the first two references in more detail.

The first reference - and to this I refere above - is not really an "award", I think. It's not an university giving me an official diploma.
The first reference is more a "Certification of having completed a longer course". It's a big private educational organization called "Paracelsus School for alternative healing (free translated)", which qualifies and educates people who want to become a holistic alternative healer in whole Europe.
But Paracelsus is not allowed to give the people the legal allowance/licence. I was an "alumniOf" Paracelus and they prepare people for the test which is done by a state office twice per year.

After passing the exam of the state (and fulfilling some other things)  you get the official legal allowance from the state office. This legal allowance is the second reference. Both references are different things.

Both references I can only implement in my aboume-page as digital copies (.jpg) , as linked documents.
Let's call them paracelsus-course.jpg and legal-allowance.jpg. There is no way to link to them online directly to any other domain, for example of Paracelsus or state office. Paracelsus and state office have websites of course, but they don't collect there documents of alternative holistic healers.

Hope this helps.

The first reference is more a "Certification of having completed a longer course".
For courses it may be useful to use the property educationalCredentialAwarded.

In any case, you need to share information about the local business and about the person. Create a separate web page to represent a person and use there the top level type such as Person

On a web page that represents a local business, simply create a button and set there the name of the founder and a link to a separate web page with personal data. In the structured data for the top level type as LocalBusiness, also create a embedded type Person and simply set a link to the personal webpage. Set this link as value for the property sameAs. E.g.:
"founder":{
       "@type":"Person",
       "name":"The name",
       "url":"https://examle.com/aboutme.html"
     }

All this will create a clearer structure of the website and make it easier for users to navigate and also reduce the size of the web page and increase the download speed.

I think EducationalCredentialAwarded fits better, but it is in pending status.
Does it make sense to use pending data types? Will Google consider and notice pending items at all? I know  that these items for references are not supported for search features, but Google should at least notice and understand items like EducationalCredentialAwarded. Otherwise it's useless and shouldn't used for important schema items, I guess.

In any case, you need to share information about the local business and about the person. Create a separate web page to represent a person and use there the top level type such as Person.

Person will be used as top-level-item for the Aboutme-page which I'm talking of here in this thread.
Localbusiness will be used for my homepage or may be for my legal page/ContactPage.

 In the structured data for the top level type as LocalBusiness, also create a embedded type Person and simply set a link to the personal webpage. Set this link as value for the property sameAs. E.g.:
"founder":{
       "@type":"Person",
       "name":"The name",
       "url":"https://examle.com/aboutme.html"
 }

SameAs or url? I think url would be more adequate. SameAs usually points to external sites.

What do you think about my origin question about the reference as jpeg which is a property of the "educationalOrganization" and so is marked up as an image of the organization itsself? Not quite right as reference for the Person as alumniOf?:

"alumniOf":{
      "@type": "EducationalOrganization",
      "name": "University of Minnesota",
      "description": "I am a graduate of the University of Minnesota and earned a Masters Degree in Counseling  Psychology (CSPP)",
      "sameAs": "https://twin-cities.umn.edu/",
      "image": {
        "@type": "ImageObject",
        "contentUrl": "https://gatehealing.com/wp-content/uploads/Jonathan-F-Anderson-Masters-Degree.jpeg",

Well, currently Google is actively using the property Speakable (BETA). IMHO the main goal of this document is to strengthen the empowerment of the person and increase the trustworthiness of the website accordingly.
SameAs or url?
IMHO the first property is more important:
URL of a reference Web page that unambiguously indicates the item's identity.

What do you think about my origin question about the reference as jpeg which is a property of the "educationalOrganization" and so is marked up as an image of the organization itsself? Not quite right as reference for the Person as alumniOf?
I agree, there is semantic uncertainty here. In my opinion, they could extend the values for the property award and set there embedded properties and types such as the image, the Digitaldocument, the URL, and something else with which you can confirm this. However, currently there is only text.

Hm, I guess "unambigiously" makes it necessary to have ONLY the referenced item on the page. This will be o.k. for  referencing a person to its aboutme-page, where the whole page is only describing the person. So "SameAs" will be fine in this case, I guess.

But referencing for example a "Publisher" from every single page to the site's legal page where not only the publisher is introduced, but also other legal matters... in this case I would feel better with "url".
Does this sound reasonable?

Speakable is an item, for which Google has a special interest and special support, at least in the US. And this special interest has beed clearly communicated.

For educationalCredentialAwarded and other pending items this is not true. So there is a big difference, isn't?

All legal information about the publisher has the same purpose -unambiguously identification of the publisher.

Granted, there is some difference here. You can understand how it works in real life only by using it.
