Will Titles longer than 65/66 Characters impact ranking?

On our site we have many pages where the Title tags are longer than 65/66 characters and as expected when they display in search results only the first part shows up following by an ellipsis (...).

Will Title tag longer than 65/66 characters have a negative impact or ratings - will Google penalize those pages or will the longer titles have no effect on rankings?

Would making Titles shorter so Google does not turn it into an ellipsis (...) improve rankings in any way?

Out of curiosity what is the number of characters allowed in a Title tag before Google turns it into an ellipsis (...)

Hi Jose,

There is no impact of Title length on ranking as such. Try to create descriptive page titles to improve appearance of your website in Google Search.

It's not about the number of characters, it's a certain width in pixels which limits what is shown of a title. This width roughly translates into something between 60 and 70 characters.

And no, Hardial is right, a title overflow has no impact on rankings.

This is a very interesting question. I recommend  this article

I did my research two months ago.

Results:
Title length pages (TOP 10) in ranges from 29 to 117 characters without spaces. I did not receive confirmation that the length of the Title somehow significantly affects traffic.

Probably a keyword which is truncated still counts for ranking purposes?
Not sure about it, but the fact of not being displayed (always) does not necessarily mean, that it does not weigh for ranking puposes.
So a shorter title tag dropping the overflowing words may affect your rankings for the dropped words.
