How to remove content from Google Announcement
0
Hello, everyone!

We noticed a slight increase in questions of the type “how to remove [insert content here] from Google” lately. This topic is covered in our documentation, but since removing content might mean different things depending on a few criteria, there are many articles, which can be daunting. We will summarize here everything that you need to know.

The first and most important thing to ask yourself is: Is the content I want to remove on my website or in another person's website?

THE CONTENT IS IN ANOTHER PERSON’S WEBSITE [quick tip, go here: https://support.google.com/legal/troubleshooter/1114905]

While this is not our speciality, this is the most common scenario we see here in the forums. Our community will try to help you, but keep in mind that we are a community of webmasters and we specialize in helping website owners, not Google Search users.

The place to go when you want content removed from google is our Legal Help Troubleshooter. If you follow the instructions there you’ll be taken to the correct form to request content removal depending on the type of problem you’re facing. Based on our experience, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Sometimes the same content might live on different URLs (e.g. sites like Facebook and LinkedIn where there may be different versions of URLs with the same content, based on language or country, mobile, etc). If that’s the case, you need to request the removal of all those URLs. Ask around! Our community can help you find those.
  • If you ask a website owner to remove images, pay attention because they might resurface if the image is posted again on another page in the same website. You might see the image appearing in Google Images before you can find out what are the new URLs. In that case, contact the website owner immediately.

If you want to remove an image posted in Social Media: The best way to do it is consulting their Help center. Check this article with some tips on how to do that.

THE CONTENT IS ON MY WEBSITE

In that case, there are a few options, depending on the type of content you want to remove from Google.

<=> I want to remove a webpage  [the all-in one article on how to do that is here]

> Removing pages that are indexed

The most straightforward way of preventing a web page from appearing in Google is simply removing the webpage from your site (i.e. returning a 404 HTTP status when requesting the page). When Google sees that the page is not there anymore, it will be removed from Google’s index. You can expedite the removal process by submitting a URL removal request, but watch out! The Removals Tool does not remove a page from the index. It will just not appear in search results.

TIP: You don’t have to remove content if you move your site to another domain. If you have all redirects set up correctly, Google will start showing the new URLs as they are crawled.

> Removing pages in cache

If a page has changed and you urgently need to expedite the removal of outdated information, you can use the Remove outdated content tool. If you don't want Google to ever display a Cached link for a page, use the noarchive meta tag.

<=> I want to remove images [the all-in one article on how to do that is here]

For quick removal, use the Remove URLs tool to remove images hosted on your site from Google's search results within hours. See full instructions here.

To prevent images from your site appearing in Google's search results, add a robots.txt instruction disallowing the User-agent Googlebot-Image from crawling the image you don’t want. See more details on how to do it here.

<=> I want to remove videos

To remove a video from your site, do one of the following:
  • Return a 404 (Not found) HTTP status code for any landing page that contains a removed or expired video. In addition to the 404 response code, you can still return the HTML of the page to make the change transparent to most users.
  • Include a noindex robots meta tag on any landing page that contains a removed or expired video. This prevents the landing page from being indexable.
  • Indicate an expiration date in your schema.org structured data (the expires property) or video sitemap (use the <video:expiration_date> element).
See full instructions here.
