Pages dropped from desktop search results, but still rank on mobile.
I am
currently experiencing an issue for Veneta.com where some of our pages
are missing from the organic search results specifically on desktop.
On mobile
these pages are shown in the search results at their original position. Since
24-06-2021 we see that pages are dropping out of the desktop search results.
Has anyone
ever experienced a similar issue before or have any direction to where to look
to fix this?
Steps to
reproduce the issue
1) Search
for ‘rolgordijnen’ on mobile Google NL (https://www.google.nl/search?q=rolgordijnen)
2) You will
see our page (veneta.com/rolgordijnen/) on the first page of the mobile search results
3) Search
for ‘rolgordijnen’ on desktop Google NL (https://www.google.nl/search?q=rolgordijnen)
4) You will
see that our page (veneta.com/rolgordijnen/) is absent from the desktop search results
These pages
are not new and have not changed in the last couple of months. We already looked
into all the related support documentation from Google but found no issues that
could be possible problems.
The URL
inspection toon in Google Search Console also shows no sign of errors for these
pages. Google is able to crawl and index these pages, you can see this if you
search for the URLs on Google.
I added a
list of URLs below that are currently facing this issue, but every few days we
notice that new pages also experience this problem.
Things I
already checked
•
Robots.txt/web.config
does not block Googlebot from crawling these pages
•
In
the log files we see that both the mobile and desktop Googlebot has crawled our
pages with success
o
Every
few days more pages are experiencing this problem, leading me to believe that
this issue happens when the desktop Googlebot visits a page
o
It
does, however, not happen to all pages that are crawled by the (desktop)
Googlebot
•
There
is no manual penalty or security issues reported in Google Search Console
•
These
pages have not been submitted to be removed in Google Search Console
•
No
changed were made to these pages

It's perhaps unusual, that's for sure. Page experience has started rolling out as a signal, but that's a boost, not a negative, it's also a tie breaker, and only for mobile results, so more expected behaviour here is that the mobile results would have changed, rather than desktop.
There can be a difference in data centres, it's possible that mobile is hitting one, desktop another, but that's normally something you'd see for hours / days, not weeks.
But here's one thing I think it might be worth investigating, all the pages I checked seemed to have FAQ markup. There's been some flux around that recently, and I wonder if desktop results are a little more hit here.
I would as an experiment try removing the FAQ markup from some of the pages and see if the situation improves. If so, it's perhaps a sign that is at the root of the issue. In that case, I'd take good think about your strategy here, and if FAQ markup is actually helpful to searchers on these pages.

Hi John,
From what I read it indeed looks like to be the same issue.
I heard from another SEO specialist in Australia that they are experiencing the same problem, maybe this is a bug on Google's end.
I don't know if it is relevant, but in that week I noticed the problem, I added a new domain to the disavow file (removed it again last week). That's the only thing that has changed since the period before were we did not experience this problem.
I asked the other SEO specialist and he mentioned that he also changed the disavow file some time before this issue started happening. This could totally be coincidental, but could may be have triggered something.
