Google couldn't fetch sitemap

Google was unable to fetch part of of mu sitemap.  It is a large site located at www.dowdlesports.com and the sitemap is automatically generated and updated.  Due to the large number of pages, the sitemap is organized with 3 files:

1) sitemap.xml - lists two sitemap files below:
       A)  sitemap_1.xml  (approximately 50,000 URLs)
       B)  sitemap_2.xml  (approximately 23,200 URLs)

Google last tried to access the sitemap_1.xml file on or around July 5th and failed.  It successfully accessed the sitemap_2.xml file on July 2nd. Coincidentally, we lost all of our rankings on July 6th and they appear to be pages listed in the sitemap_1.xml file, but that might be a coincidence since it is the large sitemap file.

Any thoughts or help is much appreciated.

Thank you for your response.  The sitemap.xml file is the index file that references the sitemap_1.xml and sitemap_2.xml files that actually contain the urls so that is how it is currently set up, but Google is showing an error reading sitemap_1.xml which has the larger share of our urls.  We have deleted and rebuilt the sitemap and the problem persists with Google, but Bing does not have any trouble accessing the sitemaps and nothing we've check the files with shows any errors.
