Request an update to outdated content in Google Search results

Overview

Use the Refresh Outdated Content tool to have Google update search results for pages or images that no longer exist, or pages that have deleted important (sensitive or critical) content.

Use this tool if...

  • you do not own the web page pointed to by Google. (If you own the page, you can ask Google to recrawl the page or hide the page.) AND
  • the page or image no longer exists or is significantly different from the current version of the page or image.

Do not use this tool if...

  • you think the information on the page or image is wrong, bad, illegal, etc. If you think the current information is bad, wrong, dangerous, personal, or harmful, see here.
  • you are a verified owner of the page in Search Console. If you are a verified owner, use this tool instead.
  • you want to permanently remove a search result for a URL that is publicly accessible. See here for more about removing information from Google and the web.
  • you just want Google to recrawl a page. If a page has not been removed or had significant changes (you deleted important images or critical information), then this request will fail. Here's how to ask Google for a simple recrawl.
  • the information is still on the live page. If the page still exists, and if the information you want removed is still there, this tool is not for you. Visit the Google Search help center and search for "remove information" to see how to request removal of existing information from Google.
  • you want to remove the page from the web. This tool only updates Google's search result, it does not remove a page from the web.

Using the Refresh Outdated Content page

  1. Review what the tool is used for and what the tool is not used for above. (Hint: it will not remove a page or image that still exists and has not changed.)
  2. Open the Refresh Outdated Content tool. You must be logged in with a Google account to use this tool, in order to prevent abuse.
  3. Enter the URL of the page or image in the required format. For an image request, you must file a separate request on every page where the image appears.
  4. Click Submit.
    • If the page or image still exists at the URL provided, you will be asked for additional information. If asked for text, provide 1-2 words that existed in the snippet of the search result, but are no longer live.
  5. After a successful submission, you will see your request added to the request queue at the bottom of the tool.
  6. Periodically check back to see the status of your request. If denied, there will be a link to an explanation why.
  7. If your request is approved:
    • If the page is no longer available, it will no longer appear in Search results.
    • If the page is still available but changed, it will remove the snippet from Search results, but will be refreshed the next time Google's crawler visits the page. Until that time, the page can still appear in Search results.

Request statuses

The following request statuses are possible:

  • Pending: The request is currently being processed. Processing can take a few days.
  • Approved: The request for update was approved, and should be live in Google Search results.
  • Denied: The request was denied for one of these reasons.
  • Expired: The request was approved but has expired. A request expires when either 180 days has passed since the request was approved, or the URL no longer exists.
  • Cancelled: The request was canceled by either the requesting user or by a verified site owner.

FAQs

Find the proper URL for your request

The correct URL to submit depends on whether you want to request a refresh of a page or an image:

Image updates
Images requests must include both the URL of the image and the URL of the containing page.  There are two ways to do this:

Method 1: (easier)

  1. Do a Google search that returns the image.
  2. Open the image search results tab as shown here:
  3. Find and right-click the image without selecting it.
  4. Click Copy link address (not Copy image address). The URL should start with something like this: https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=..."
  5. Copy this URL into the Copy link box in the Refresh Outdated Content request.

Method 2: (More complex)

  1. Do a Google search that returns the image.
  2. Open the image search results tab as shown here:
  3. Click the image to see an expanded version of the image.
  4. Right-click the expanded image and select Copy Image Address (not Copy Link Address) and copy the URL into the Image URL box in the Refresh Outdated Content request.
  5. Right-click the expanded image again and select Copy Link Address (not Copy Image Address) and copy the URL into the Containing page URL box in the Refresh Outdated Content request.

Page updates

  1. Find a link to page in a Google Search result.
  2. Hover over the link to the page.
    • DO right-click, then select Copy Link Address in the popup menu.
    • Do NOT copy the text of the displayed link.
    • Do NOT click the link and copy the URL from the page in your browser.

  3. Find any additional URLs for the same page: It's common for the same content to appear in multiple URLs. For example, all the following blog post URLs all point to the same page:
    http://www.example.com/forum/thread/123
    http://www.example.com/forum/post/456
    http://www.example.com/forum/thread/123?post=456
    http://www.example.com/forum/thread/123?post=456&sessionid=12837460
    

    Even if you successfully request a refresh of one URL, if the content you're trying to refresh appears in our search results under other URLs, it can still appear. If this is the case, submit additional refresh requests, one for each URL that displays this content.

Outdated image or page still appears in Google Search

If your refresh request has been approved but you still see that outdated content in our search results, confirm that the URL that appears in Google search results is exactly the same as the one you submitted for a refresh (including capitalization). If not, you should request a refresh of the additional URL(s) that still appear in search results.
